Both USB ports suddenly stopped working. Tested with several devices.
Power is there, indicated by the light on MSFT wireless mouse
There is a screw to the right of the upper USB port. Unusuall??
I have 2 other 42p's but do not have this screw.
Is there something specific for this 2373C96 ser# xxxxxxx ?

Welcome to the forum!
I'd suspect a hardware failure here, ThinkPads of this generation are infamous for USB ports going nuts.
Try booting from a "live" Linux CD and see whether the ports work under a different OS. Make sure that any devices are plugged in on the boot.
This distro will work "out of the box" on your machine:

moste of the linux cds have the option to load linux without installing anything. one i know of that does this is ubuntu.
about the USB problem u have.
check if you have the newest drivers installed.
use lenovos download and support site .
newest Intel chipset drivers.
Newest Power management drivers
these are what i can think of is related to the USB controller on your motherboard.
a good feture on the lenovo dowloade and supprt site is the release notes for the drivers.
check em to see if your problem is listed on the specific drivers page.

The distro I've suggested will run from your CD-ROM (or whatever media drive your T42p has) without affecting the contents of the hard disk.
Once again, make sure that whatever you want to test the USB ports with is plugged when booting the "live" CD.
Good luck and keep us posted.

George, I made a CDfrom this URL you sent me http://www.linuxmint.com/release.php?id=15
but I cannot make it boot. XP always comes up. What next?
Incidentally, I had an obsolete BIOS, loaded the current one (MIGR-50273), but that did not fix the problem.

Have you burned it as an ISO image file?
Are you trying to boot using F12 and your media drive as a temporary boot device?
Good luck and let us know.

Guru, thanks for your advice on 10/20 ... I had 14 days delay with this problem, which I'll restate:
both USBs stopped working about the time when I downloaded the new version of Apple Itunes. ???
I do have the correct BIOS.
PC doctor tells me all USBs are vorking properly.
There is power because I see green light on my MSFT USB mouse plug.
I followed your advice to try if USBs work with Linux, but still cannot load it while pressing F12. The XP always comes up.
I'll be grateful for instructions how to load Linux via CD drive -- or whatever you think I should do.

from the posted comments it appears there is some design flaw of USB on T42,
does anyone know if Lenovo plans to advise T42 users how to fix the problem?
not having USB working severely limits usability of T42
