Well, it doesn't have to be USB, can be a PC card/PCMCIA network card too if her T40 has the slot. The specs say it has one on the left.

I cant find a model number on my Levovo rubbish machine either, this is the WORST PC I have owned in the last decade. Why is it so hard to print amdoel number on the mmaqchine, are Lenovo frightened that it might be identifed. Te machine barely works as it is.

That's odd. Every model of Lenovo ThinkPad I have owned has had the model printed on it, usually below the screen on the left.
If it is missing for some reason, you can try opening an elevated Command Prompt (filename: CMD.EXE) and issuing a
wmic.exe bios get name,serialnumber,version
command. That should hopefully display enough information about the computer to help you further troubleshoot its issue.
