My t61p had the GPU go out on it. So I just bought a new motherboard off ebay. Once I installed the motherboard, it shows the lenovo bios screen, then says thermal sensing error and powers itself off. What can I do to get the CPU working? I thought maybe I could update the BIOS like I read in another thread, but it powers itself right back off. I can't even get it to boot off a cd to update the BIOS.

As my good friend Lead_org suggests, it sounds like your using a Penryn CPU on a Merom board. The penryn cpu, models T8100, T8300, T9300, T9500 require a special board. You can use one with a patched bios, but you'll need a working and STABLE system in order to install the bios.
You can try pressing "escape" when the error posts, but if that doesn't work it may be easiest to install a Merom cpu, either as a replacement, or temporarily until you get the bios installed.
Ideally it would have been best to get a Penryn board to begin with.
If you want a Merom chip, I could swap one for your Penryn, or perhaps send you one to use long enough to install the bios, just please don't try to install the bios while the system is unstable, or the board will become unusable.

resend the system board to the seller and get a Penryn-compatible system board, if you don't want to downgrade to a Merom CPU or patch the BIOS.

I looked up the FRU on the new motherboard and it said the CPU is T7500. I'm pretty sure mine is a T9XXX something. I'll look it up when I get home. I might be down to swap since this computer is just for my parents anyways.

That would definitely be a swap in my favor if I gave you a T7500 (2.2ghz) for a T9300 (2.5ghz). I could give you something fater that will work to make it a more even trade, or add something else you need.
