Absolute Computrace - How does this work?

2011-09-21, 16:01 PM

How do I remote wipe my tablet if it is stolen?

How do I track its location?

This is what is promised on the lenovo website..........
"The ThinkPad is protected with the pre-enabled Computrace® persistence technology by Absolute® Software. Absolute specializes in software and services for the security and management of computers and mobile devices. Once activated, Computrace technology provides a persistent connection back to your ThinkPad in the event it is lost, missing or stolen. This technology allows you to freeze the device, delete data, and perform other remote security and management functions."

I would assume you register it with Computrace and pay them a monthly fee. Then you use their site to track it or disable it.

Thats how you do the lojack for laptops online but no info for the thinkpad tablet.

I emailed Absolute,

"We purchased some of the new lenovo thinkpad tablets with Absolute persistence technology pre installed.
Can you please email me info about the price options for tracking and remote wiping these units."

Absolute Reply:

"Thank you for contacting Absolute. In regards to pricing for our Computrace products we actually send our customers to their preferred OEM or reseller for quotes.  We work with such partners as Dell, CDW, Lenovo, Insight, PC Mall and others.  Where do you normally purchase your software/hardware?"

Looks like he is right:
https://www.insight.com/pages/brands.web?manufacturer_code=COMPUTRACE&manufacturer_id=0007050903&microsite=0&itemSearched=computrace

I would call one of the reseller's sales reps and speak to them.

Ditto here I can't find a dang thing about pricing or signing up. This is one of the bigger reasons I got the Thinkpad. Opening the app pre-installed all you get is an ad for the Absolute website which sends you to the business services side of the site. Sounds expensive. I have it for my X200 and it was a snap to get going.

Still no useful information on this. Nice to buy a tablet with this being a selling point, then get no useful functionality.

I think you can say that for almost everything on this tablet.

Micro-usb charger - great!  Get it - takes forever unless you have a 2A adapter.

Printer share - great! Get it - trial version.

McAfee pre-installed - great! Get it - trial version.

Lenovo App Store - only apps that are guaranteed to work - great! Get it - buggy and worthless.

Business class machine that I should be able to customize how I want - great! Get it - locked down so I can't uninstall any crapware.

I could go on, but I think you get my point.  Very disappointing machine.  I won't be selecting Lenovo for anything again, and as I am a purchasing officer, no one else here will be either.

That's exactly my view ... if you think also on the other bloatware (e.g. second gallery from from arcsoft) or the MyScript Notes Mobile mess.

You have to sign up for it. It's not automatic.
