Connecting cell phone to tablet via USB

2012-07-30, 11:15 AM
I have a Nexus S smart phone that, when I connect it to computers, acts like a regular USB drive.
I'd like to be able to connect it to my thinkpad tablet as well, for example to copy pictures I shot. However, when I connect it to my tablet, the phone detects the USB connection and lets me enable USB drive mode, but the tablet doesn't seem to recognize it. At least in the file manager I'm using, file manager HD, when I open the folder where USB drives are mounted, it says empty folder. It does work with regular USB sticks.

Why is that and is there a solution?

The support specialist is correct only if you are attempting to connect from your phones micro USB to your tablets micro USB, if however, you are trying to connect from your phones micro USB to your tablets full size USB, your problem is an easy one to fix :-) Connect them, set your phone to its USB mode, then, on your tablet go into the settings menu, select storage, scroll to the bottom and you should see that under the heading USB storage the option "mount USB storage" is white, click it, now go to your file manager, as long as it is looking in the right USB directory (/mnt/usbdrive) you will see what you are looking for :-)

Hello Flyboy23,

The USB port is a charge only. Not able import/export documents.

Here is a helpful link:

Question for Justin: which USB port are we to use to transfer files between a laptop or desktop computer to/from the TPT?

The micro-b-usb (the usual one to charge it) located on the bottom of the tablet.

The TPT also has a non micro female USB port as well. I will try mine today after work.

Not to connect to a computer I hope. The female type A USB connector is a USB host port on both the TPT and computer. Even if you do find a non-standard type A male/male USB cable, you should never connect two USB host ports unless using a special USB data transfer cable that is made for the purpose. USB host ports are powered and connecting the TPT 5 V to the computer's 5 V is not a good idea. Needless to say, there won't be any data transfer either.

Recent posting sequence;

MaxBuck : Question for Justin: which USB port are we to use to transfer files between a laptop or desktop computer to/from the TPT?

Justin: The micro-b-usb (the usual one to charge it) located on the bottom of the tablet.

You: The TPT also has a non micro female USB port as well. I will try mine today after work.

The only certainty here is that you weren't replying to me since I hadn't posted in this thread yet.

You clearly missed the point of this thread, read the first post.

He/She wants to read read the files on his TPT from his phone.

Justin thought he was talking about the micro slot, I clearly stated it also has a non micro USB port. I will try connecting my phone today.

Thanks

As for Max's question the regular USB cable lets you transfer to and from the PC and Tablet. Just unplug it from the ac adapter and connect to the PC.
