HoneyBar (hides android system bar) + Quill = Handwriting Bliss!

2012-01-24, 10:48 AM

Hey guys, just found this:

We know that quill is an awesome app for taking handwritten notes and exporting them to PDF files,

however, although the app has a pen-only mode, most people hit their palms on the android system bar or lenovo's launch wheel button while they're writing. This causes the pen-recognition to pause and sometimes doesn't allow you to write on a very small chunk of the screen at all until you lift the pen off the screen and let the sensors reset - results in the annoyance missed letters/strokes.

Honeybar (99c on the normal android market) lets you hide the android bar and launch wheel bar if you tap a small area which can be set to the left of where the launch-wheel button would normall be. Obviously, one could accidentally hit this "invisible hide button" aswell, but it's much smaller (just larger than the launch-wheel button) and I've found quill functions alot better with it (less pauses when capacitative layer detects that you've bumped the system bar).

Root is mandatory to be able to hide the Honeycomb system bar.

Also, http://ppareit.github.com/HideBar/ hides the bar for free, and there is no 'active' area to accidentially hit. With 'Browser' button reprogrammed to function as 'MENU' instead, the bar is very rarely missed.

A better yet solution is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301857 , where one can control which applications show the system bar, and which do not.

I have root working but not sure how to reprogram the "browser" button to Menu.  Whats the best way to do that?  Can't get Buttonremapper apk to work.

Need to mount the /system partition as writeable

mount -o rw,remount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /system

then edit /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl and change line

key 150   EXPLORER

to

key 150   MENU

and finally reboot.

I apologize in advance for the ignorance, but in the above post, are you typing a command to the system? And with what program do you edit a .kl file to remap the keys?

I have SSH client installed, so use a PC + http://winscp.net/eng/index.php . Another option is to install android SDK, drivers and use ADB tool from the SDK.

But it's probably possible to do all this from the tablet itself, through apps like 'Root Explorer' etc.

Best: ES File Explorer (with root permission and /system writeable checked in settings)

Navigate to file, hold-click, choose open-as, choose text, choose ES Note Editor, edit the file as needed, choose save when prompted.

You can change permissions with ES as well.

I like that it automatically makes a *.bak file of whatever you edit and save.

Stein, your suggestion works really well, thanks.

I got it to work successfully. It was a good experiment. Any ideas on how to take this further and make the button show/hide the status bar? Perhaps in conjunction with HoneyBar? That program doesn't work well with the ADW launcher on the home screen, if I want to enable the status bar to check battery, time, etc.
