Power button problems - ThinkPad tablet (android)

2011-10-15, 5:24 AM

Anyone else have problems powering on the device? I sometimes have to press the power button several times, then sometimes, and I keep trying to vary how long I press it before it actually turns on. Is that just me/do I need to get it replaced?

This seems to be a trait of the TPT and manifests itself in different ways.

Some people have had probs getting the device to wake when charging. Mine decided it didn't want to turn on at all one day ... and has refused to ever since.

Some major bugs in the power management?

I'll assume that's more of a software issue and keep myself happy then...

Compared to my other Android devices (Flyer, Desire etc), I notice a split second delay after pressing the power button on the Thinkpad Tablet before it powers on. So far, mine has switched on 100% of the time with a quick press of the power button, just have to put up with that slight delay.

  • A quick press on the power button wakes the TPT from sleep
  • A long pess (several seconds) is required to turn on the TPT from power-off
  • If the battery is completely discharged, it wil not turn on even if the USB charger is plugged in - you need to wait until the battery is partially charged.Overzealous discharge protection, I think.

Power Button switch fell off the motherboard

2011-10-19, 3:18 AM

The power switch of my tablet just fell off the motherboard, be careful when you press the power button, a heavy press will push it off the board. Looks like a bad solder.

Have you contacted Lenovo for warranty?

Have you opened the device to take a look?  Or are you guessing bad solder?

Started off as being unresposive, then it became progressively harder to turn on the machine.after some time i could no longer feel the button click, opened up the tablet and saw a powerswitch dangling from its solders. Tried to manually place it back and click the switch , the machine booted up. Brought it to my friendly neighborhood mobile phone repair guy , he resoldered it and now the button feel is much much better than the first time i got the machine, this led to my conclusion it was a bad solder. Did not bother to send it back as i am halfway accross the world.

Hmm, quite interesting.  I'm glad you were able to get it fixed...that is was just the solder and not the pads on the trace.  I'm assuming because of the ease of fix, it was just the solder as well.  If it was the pads on the trace, then it could go either way of too much pressure or manufacturing defect.

I haven't noticed any sponginess on any of the TPTs I have handled, but I will keep an eye out.  Thanks for letting us know.
