Re: Power button problems

Hi,

now I was hit by the well known power button issue, unfortunately 17 month after my purchase of the tablet. Is there a chance, that Lenovo will repair the button, although my warranty already expired? I mean, it is still a well known problem of this series of tablets and definitely not a handling issue.

Thanks in advance!

Best Regards

Jules

Re: Power button problems - ThinkPad tablet (android)

I first encountered this problem on my TPT less than six months after purchase.  Returned the unit for warranty repair and the fix seemed to work.  Now, as of a week ago, the problem has returned.  The problem manifests itself in two ways.  1) In order ot power on, the power button must be held down for almost ten seconds compared to 2-3 seconds in the past.  2) The TPT will no longer allow me to turn off the screen without powering completely off.  In the past, I was able to just power off the display and leave the TPT on.  To turn back on the screen, I would just press the power button for a split second.  Now, when I press the power button to turn off the screen, the entire unit shuts down and I am forced to power up once again with the requisite long-hold of the power button and wait time for the system to restart.

Not good.

I think that they won´t repair it. :smileysad:

. It´s known problem that should be repaired by manufacture. :smileywink:

Re: Power button problems - ThinkPad tablet (android)

My power button is broken. It is because of the poor soder that these micro switches has. My company was going to buy many for the mechanics but not any more. I am disapointed with the quality of design in that area. I cannot perform my work with my tablet anymore. My company is looking now at the iPads. When the tablet was working correctly I thought I had a winner, I hope that anyone that is an the engineer or designer of this tablet get to understand how I feel and look at the design of this tablet since this tablet is not only used just to play games but for serious work.

Re: Power button problems - ThinkPad tablet (android)

Power button came completely off, tried to solder, no success.  Was able to power off/on device by removing/replacing this cable (not my tablet, just a pic).

tpt_epoxy_repair.jpg

Was able to power on device with penny as well, so then I tried to clean the pc board from excess solder and guess I burned through because I was not able to use the penny anymore.

Sometime during the process, which I was a little to hasty with, I disconnected this cable from the monitor.  I thought the plastic casing was one of those flip ups and cracked some of the plastic,  as you can see was still able to get the ribbon in flush:

Cracked_Plastic.jpg

Not exactly sure of the chronology but sometime after the plastic crack, burn of the pc board I was no longer able to power on device by plugging in the previous pics ribbon.  And now when I plug in the ac adapter the device does that vibrating thing, screen flickers and nothing else.

So my question is would this have to do with me cracking the plastic or could it be related to burning the pc board's solder?  Was thinking about buying the replacement part (63Y1860), but not sure if that will be the only fix now.

Hi frogman_pep

uhm.... it is hard to tell if the replacement part (63Y1860) will solve your problems.

Since you have experience disabling the TPT, did you tried this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbePID-21gg

..maybe it can gives you some inspiration.

There was also some discussion about reparing the TPT power button here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521389

I tried to document as much as possible of this tablet here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Lenovo_ThinkPad_Tablet

I hope this can help.

Regards
