Since windows MBN service allows, by default, connection establishment to the network type with the most power signal, this selection spends a lot of time. If we'll restrict modem selection range, definitely reconnection time might be decreased.

I understand but I am almost sure it is not the case. Since it happens first, I can reproduce it multiple times even staying at single location with strong LTE signal: wake up (slow), sleep, wait 5 minutes, wake up (slow again) and so on  ... until the driver is restarted. It is a corrupted internal state that causes the slow operations. It is not about signal selection after you move to a different location because the disconnect/connect (which does not start signal selection, you have to turn the mobile broadband off to search signal again) is also slow. My guess is there is some bug in messaging between the firmware and generic MBIM driver, which is the layer I'd like to get trace of.

Well, the netsh trace. I'll try to setup it. It is just more complicated to reproduce the issue due the need of subway trips here and there Smiley Happy

I found couple of following errors in Event Log. The Event ID error wasn't there with older 1415.07 firmware.

Re: Sierra Wireless EM7345 Beta Build 4389

Amy,

it is early but I can report some experiences on ThinkPad 8 tablet (it might be different on laptops) with the 1529.05 beta firmware compared to 1415.07 one. Short version:

Improvements

  • power consumption in sleep (Connected Standby) mode - typically 2% to 3% per 8 hours (the 1415.07 firmware have 4% to 8%)
  • signal level indicator accuracy
  • HSPA+ is added to list of supported 3G data classes (1415.07 firmware provided HSDPA and HSUPA only)

Issues

  • more frequent dropped connections (note that it is still possible to manually reconnect without any problem thanks to KB3036606 hotfix), typically once per 48 hours. The "Connect automatically" option does not help to improve it. With the 1415.07 firmware the single connection session persists for 14 days easily, even without "Connect automatically" option used.
  • causes random delay up to 30 seconds when wake up from sleep (Connection Standby) mode . This is unfortunately the most annoying issue (that I have already experienced with previous 15xx.xx firmware versions) since it happens (returns) at least once per 24 hour, sometimes even two times per day. It is power management related, occurs when running on battery only. While it happens it is still connected to home provider and data are going through. Persists until the EM7345 driver or tablet is restarted. It has never happend with 1415.07 firmware for several months.

Is possible to communicate with the Intel team that delivered the beta software and ask them how to narrow and diagnose the last issue ? I am able to use WDK tools and create ETL trace files, just have to know what kind of trace to provide. Can we expect another beta iteration soon ?

Currently I will test it for several more days and then revert back to 1415.07 because these random 20 to 30 seconds wake up delays makes the tablet almost useless Smiley Frustrated

Re: Sierra Wireless EM7345 Beta Build 4389

What BIOS are you running?  I am not seeing the wake issue (Win10 / Latest BIOS).

I am seeing the connection drop issue (automatically reconnect does not work at all for me since switching to Win10) but much better than the last FW and never requires a reboot or disable/enable to reconnect.

Re: Sierra Wireless EM7345 Beta Build 4389

Windows 8.1 x64, latest BIOS 1.27. The only change is the firmware version so it is easy to detect what causes it. All previous 15xx.xx versions have the issue, that's why I use 1415.07. As for the stuck reconnection issue, it is solved by the Microsoft KB hotfix for Windows 8.1. I thought the fix is propagated to Windows 10 but now it looks like another reason to not upgrade to Windows 10.

Thanks. Would be possible to communicate with them directly ? Via email, forum, Skype chat etc ? I know it is complicated these days but it can noticeably speed up the iterations to a solution Smiley Happy

Re: Sierra Wireless EM7345 Beta Build 4389

Since I installed this update, I don't get email notifications during connected standby. This holds true even if I am connected via WLan, so it is not a firmware problem.

Is there anybody getting email notifications after having installed the update?

Yes, it works as expected (via both mobile and wifi connection). Check Event Log for errors. Make sure "quiet hours" are not enabled.
