Sierra Wireless EM7345 Beta Build 4389

In response to customer reports of subpar performance of the Sierra Wireless EM7345 driver v. 1.8.10513.4174/ v. 2.5.10640.4317, an upgraded beta driver is being made available for customers willing to upgrade their Windows device. This update has been designed to resolve many of the problems customers have reported with the most recent Sierra Wireless EM7345 driver available.

The main discussion thread for these customer reports is located here:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Tablets/Sierra-Wireless-EM7345-ThinkPad-8-and-10-general-issues...

The Sierra Wireless EM7345 driver being made available is build 4389. Please note it is a generic package. The generic package includes a beta AT&T version, but the final AT&T version will not be available until build 4389 is published to support.lenovo.com in November 2015. This package includes full support for Verizon.

Qualifications:

Please note this is a beta release, available for testing and not the final product.

Only for devices running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

Please do not implement if you do not feel confident in your ability to roll back to an earlier driver.

The full release is scheduled to be published late November 2015.

Feedback provided in this discussion will be used by Lenovo to identify future improvements.

Re: Sierra Wireless EM7345 Beta Build 4389

While reading attached PDF files (thanks) I am a bit confused by this note (FIH7160_M2_R1_MODEM_01.1529.05 Release Notes, page 3):

The use case to step back and re‐flash older FW release on a newer FW release is
not supported and has to be avoided .Due to changes in the prg files auto preserve
feature handles upgrading functionality only. Downgrading FW release to older
versions is out of scope.

Does it mean I can not revert back to older firmware version if this beta firmware has issues ?

Re: Sierra Wireless EM7345 Beta Build 4389

Successfully installed. Will report after a week or two whether there is an improvement over the 1415.07 firmware version.

One of issues I consider as fatal error is if the firmware causes the tablet to lock up on wake from sleep (you have to use hard reset that means possible data loss and file system corruption). This was the case of all firmware versions newer than 1415.07. The software also contains a new component Sierra Wireless Service (Windows Service). Anyone knows what it exactly does ? There is still older known Firmware Updater Service as well.

The information The generic package includes a beta AT&T version, but the final AT&T version will not be available until build 4389 is also a bit misleading. Most of issues were reported in EU countries, for the generic firmware version. It seems as the fixes were made to the AT&T specific version only ?

Re: Sierra Wireless EM7345 Beta Build 4389

It took few hours only to experience first issue of 1529.05 firmware. My environment is ThinkPad 8, Windows 8.1 x64, KB3036606 hotfix installed.

I performed a "lost signal test" in local subway. We don't have tunnels between stations covered by any mobile signal so it is temporarily lost. After returing back to location with mobile signal it took more than 10 seconds to wake up from sleep mode (typically it takes one second or less). Once it gets to this state any other deep (it means to wait at least 5 minutes between them) sleep-wake cycles have the same issue, it takes too long to wake up the device. Moreover operations like disconnect and connect again becomes also slow. The only way to get out of this is to restart the driver, either by devcon restart command or by Disable/Enable operations in Device Manager. There isn't anything suspicious in Event Log and power consumption in sleep (connected standby) mode was normal, about 0.5% per hour.

Note that the 1415.07 firmware does not have this issue.

Re: Sierra Wireless EM7345 Beta Build 4389

What if to enable modem LTE mode only? At least for the test purpose.

I can't do that since these virtual COM port don't work for me. It would not change it much anyway, maybe it is not clear from my description. There is absolutely no signal (no LTE, no 3G, no 2G) in the subway tunnels, I am aware many of you can't imagine it in 2015 Smiley Happy Otherwise there is LTE coverage.

I have also tested transition from LTE to 2G/EDGE and back, no issues so far.

Previous 15xx.xx firmware version had similar issue with the exception the device did not wake up at all, so there is a little improvement. If there was a tool or description how to enable a diagnostic log similar to GNSS driver (see GNSS\Readme.txt file, 'To capture logs' paragraph in the installer) I think we could find the issue.

Re: Sierra Wireless EM7345 Beta Build 4389

I didn't mean the signal in the subway or reconnection in the subway to the different network. My suggestion relates to the reconnection time after the device wake-up. If modem losts the carrier, it tries to find new network. Since windows MBN service allows, by default, connection establishment to the network type with the most power signal, this selection spends a lot of time. If we'll restrict modem selection range, definitely reconnection time might be decreased.

AT command is one of the solution. Another ones are Sierra Watcher app and the 3rd party tool.

If you mean the Intel M.2 trace tool, it is no longer part of the package. It always caused the device to crash into 1CDC error state after few seconds, regardless of the firmware version. I think it would be better to have a trace provider for WDK traceview utility. It might exists but it don't know its GUID. It is also complicated by the connected standby mode because all these issues happens in (deep) sleep mode which is hard to diagnose.
