TPT2 has USB port power issue

2013-01-04, 21:03 PM

Ok, I have not got mine yet but its shipped so this matter really frightened me!

These are from this forum and another one

 - I received my TP2 tablet for work today. I like the size and build quality, but I discovered a serious flaw. The USB port on the tablet will only accept a USB thumbdrive and not an external USB HDD or an external USB DVD/CD drive. I was going to install Office 2010 and after plugging in the non-powered DVD drive realized the TP2 was not reading it. The same thing happened when I tried my Seagate USB HDD. Both of these devices work with the Samsung 500t, 700t, ASUS 810 and the Envy x2. I contacted Lenovo tech support and sure enough, the TP2 does not have the power to run these external devices. I was told the only way they would work is if the TP2 is docked in the $100 external desktop dock and the external devices would have to run through that. I also tried to plug in my ThinkPad USB keyboard and that doesn't work either. What good is a built in USB port if it can only be used for a thumbdrive? This is an absolute deal breaker for my company because we would need to connect to these type of external devices in the field and there is no way we are lugging that huge desktop dock around just to use simple USB peripherals.

Ours are going back and we will have to decide on a different tablet. Certainly Lenovo tech support could be wrong, but we have tested on several tablets and no go. I can't even load Office because there aren't any desktop docks in stock to order anyway. Hopefully you guys are having better luck, but if you haven't tried to connect these types of external devices and will need the capability I would suggest testing it now before your return Window runs out.

- I can confirm this is happening as well on mine. Kinda of surprised. Usb keys work but no external notebook drive.

- That is correct. I tried to connect a external travel HD and it did not have enough power. It will support a USB thumbdrive.

Whats wrong with Lenovo ? What kinda "PC" is that ?

I hope it will be fixed with a software tweak.

Solved! See the solution

I just received a TP2 today.  Since we require Windows 8 Enterprise, I too have been working with USB issues, but have found a different experience.

- the TP2 won't boot from any USB key connected directly to the USB port or from a powered USB hub.

- it will boot from a Lenovo portable USB DVD/RW drive that is NOT powered.

- after I installed Windows 8 Enterprise, the USB port still read the DVD and a non powered external hard drive (a 2 1/2" Seagate 500GB in a Vantech case). I cannot verify if these worked on the factory Lenovo Windows 8 Pro installation.

I have also used a USB hub to connect a mouse, keyboard, DVD and hard drive mentioned above, a USB key and a USB network dongle. All of them are detected under Windows 8 Enterprise and work fine.

I've tried the same scenario with a Samsung Ativ 500T and was not able to load the software on that device.

I hope this helps out.

Thanks for the info

Will it read the external HDD drive if the tablet is plugged into power?

I tried with an older external travel HD and a newer seagate travel HD and both did not work.

03rst,

I did not quite get what you meant.

Do you mean that after installing W8 Enterprise everything turned to be OK or before installing it everything WAS ok  in the first place ?

In the other forum, no one was able to connect any powerless HDD to TPT2.

Some people could not even connect USB Keyboard to the device.

Sounds like he got them to work installing a different windows version, I would be curious if someone installed a vanilla win 8 pro OS. I will do exactly that when I get my tablet Monday.  I'd love to hear an official Lenovo comment as the Tpt2 s USB port was clearly advertised as working with external DVD and hard drives, I saved the PDF advert., I hope it's not a case of blatant false advertising.

- I tried to connect a powered Seagate hd but my tpt2 had no response. I saw a post on Lenovo community said his tpt2 could detect usb devices after reinstall windows 8 enterprise. I was surprised.

- it doesn't power an external hard drive even when charging up on the power adaptor [tested with a portable HD]. A thumbdrive works fine as I have used it to install software.

- there are going to be a lot of people that only have their software on DVD and not on a thumb drive. So this doesn't do much good, not to mention if you are traveling business person and ever need to connect to a burner or external hard drive you are screwed.

- I tried that with my fairly new LG Dvd burner and it would at least spool up but the TP2 still couldn't read or detect it. Hope you have better luck. My biggest problem is that my company purchased several hundred Seagate USB 3.0 external hard drives for us to use when we travel. They are not powered and will not work with the TP2, so we are looking at other solutions. It is looking like the TP2 is just underpowered for whatever reason and if you want to use DVD burners and external hard drives they will need to have full power capability through an A/C adapter. This is ridiculous because I really like the tablet. Oh well. Good luck to everyone else.

It's a "PC" ( supposed to be ), and it cannot detect a DVD burner, HDD, etc.

It's like having a car without wheels.

Exactly,

Lenovo's official words:

"This may not be your full time, all day, every day PC, but you got a printer, you got a scanner, you got keyboard, you got mouse, you got something."

And later he says:

"Oh yea, external hard drives, thumbdrives"

I'm speechless !
