Re: TPT2 has USB port power issue

2013-01-23, 15:57 PM

Mark it is kind of odd that Lenovo leaves its social media program director to figure out a major hardware fault in a tablet that will probably sell in the tens of thousands.  No disrespect for you, and Lenovo should be lucky to have you doing there engineering work, but it just doesn't make a lot of sense.  This is a HUGE issue, just imagine how disgruntled your customers are going to be when this tablet is in the hand of many.  How can Lenovo not afford to put an engineer, half a dozen tpt2's and a bunch of peripherals in a room and tell them to figure it out?!

I really love the tablet, but part of the reason I'm returning it is seeing this very odd process of troubleshooting this issue.  It makes me fearful of what kind of tech support Lenovo will give me and other customers in the future.

I can confirm that none of the usb hard dives I tried worked with the Tpt2, I tried a 2tb WD passport, a Toshiba 1Tb usb3.0 drive I also tried 2 external ODD's: a Samsung and a Liteon and none worked!!

I tried 2 older usb 2.0 hdd's without luck

There is no way this is a glitch. it must be part of its design!!

I was looking at the device manager for the ports, and it says they are rated for 500mA, so I believe it is either a hardware malfunction in the ports themselves, or the drivers. Hopefully it is just a driver issue, because then they can just send us all an update to fix the issue.

Spinedoc, et all,

First - thanks everyone for all the detailed feedback - I have consolidated into a case for our engineering teams to review.  Some of you inquired about my involvement, and it is certainly never my intent to do Lenovo a reputational disservice due to my participation.  As a bit of background...

We launched this forum at the end of 2007 as a peer to peer discussion forum (see the rules link)  - a resource for all of our customers to ask and answer questions for one another and share their lenovo experience.  The forum is great for that, but as with this issue, it is also great at bringing customers together around common problems.   These broader issues, by their nature typically require help from Lenovo to reach a resolution - either by making a change to BIOS, drivers, hardware, or by researching and reaching a clarification of a product spec.

Over these last five years, I've been involved in many of these discussions, and others from Lenovo have joined in both official and volunteer capacities and I hope this trend will continue (others joining).

My intent in this discussion was to try to understand the multiple (related) concerns being stated and to get answers / get those addressed for which we already have answers (or can create new tips / information) and to narrow down the issue and collect enough information for engineering to be able to investigate the case.

Thanks again for your patience.

Mark

Mark that makes sense, and it seems its all headed in the right direction. I may revisit Lenovo again in the future, but unfortunately my return window is ticking.

Add another TPT2 to this count.

I tried both my Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini hard drive and my Samsung external DVD writer SE-S084 from the TPT2's USB port.  In each case, the drives would attempt to spin up constantly, and the power lights would flash, but in neither case was the drive ever recognized by the OS.  In the case of the DVD writer, I was not able to eject the tray either.

I tried both drives on another PC to ensure they still function:  They do, and they always have on numerous PCs prior to the TPT2.

Thanks, Mark, for you and your team's attentions to this problem.

JC

To anyone having this problem: Even if you'll not post on this thread, please support this thread by going back to first page first post and press "Me Too" / "I have this question too" button to signal Lenovo how serious this issue is.

In order to find a solution for this or other problems, crowd intelligence might help engeneers to provide a short term workaround to calm flying tempers till more deep down corrections can be incorporated in production lines.

For this I have opened a thread that might develop into a hub for ideas.

Have a look please - maybe you are the one to provide the essential idea for a satisfactory cure to this boil
