Re: TPT2 has USB port power issue

2013-01-28, 16:01 PM

Designed in China, made in China, QC in China tends to be more iffy than designed elsewhere, made in China, QC elsewhere. Apple products are an example of the latter. I'm guessing that Lenovo products are an example of the former.

The PCBs for the TPT1 never even had a surface finish or plated holes. Components were soldered to bare copper SMD pads and only these pads were used to hold down switches. Anyone opened a TPT2 yet? Would be interesting to see whether anything has changed.

Since the contract always goes to the lowest bidder I doubt much has changed.

However, this is a 3679CTO model - i.e. a custom built, pre-production model...

Thanks! Areas with no solder mask, like around those screws, sure look like bare copper to me. Here's a close-up of a section of the front camera board from a TPT1. Note the bare copper in unmasked areas and on pads where the solder didn't flow freely, more than likely due to oxidation of the copper;

Here's an example of what's going to happen to exposed bare copper over time. This is a PCB (made in Taiwan) in the TPT1 dock;

Like I said - it's a custom-built, pre-production model.

Do we have a volunteer willing to open up their production model? I'm not stepping forward...

I heard you, but things would have looked a bit more promising if.....

Do we have a volunteer willing to open up their production model?

Don't do this because of me. Pluck out these memories and enjoy your TPT2.

Not according to Lenovo's documentation, it isn't. See the Notebook PDF file here:

If you try and configure an order for a US Tablet is clearly shows the 3679CTO for the release/production model on the orders website.

Then I wonder if Lenovo are trying to clear out inventory in the US of early models...
