Re: TPT2 has USB port power issue

2013-02-09, 12:11 PM

its been weeks since lenovo has made any reply, we know that mark_lenovo is still active, he posted a remark today on the wifi issue. However they haven't been  made any comments on solving the usb issue. I am fed up with the wait and have returned my tpt2. Was thinking about the Helix but have changed my mind after seeing the quality (the camera misalignment issue) and service that Lenovo offers. I really would have liked to have kept the TPT2. Its just a pity as the TPT2 has so much to offer if only they just gotten the USB and stylus calibration right.

Re: TPT2 has USB port power issue

I like MicroUSB charger port a lot. Would not change for 900mA USB port. I don't really see this like a big issue. This is a frequent problem for phones and low power slates. My Samsung N7000 cannot power external HDD either.

I think I will replace my current HDD with low-power HDD. Unfortunately, it is hard to find power specifications for external HDDs. So I want to buy 2.5" SATA->USB enclosure and HDD separately. According to some test Hitachi 5K1000 goes as high as 2.2W during seek, and USB officially can hold 2.5W so some power is left for SATA->USB3.0 electronics.

It would be nice if this thread could be stickied, instead of having forum members spend the time to keep it near the top.

Mark, you had said earlier in this thread that you won't abandon this topic and will follow up on it. Due to your word I am still holding onto this device. Can you get an official answer or stance on it and close the loop?

Please understand that even though people would rather hear that the usb port power issue would be fixed, yet most will be satisfied with a simple acknowledgement of the issue. Prompt admission and fixing your marketing material will go a long way too.

FWIW, Lenovo has re-enabled the "Write a review" option for the TPT2.  I just wrote one highlighting that I truly enjoy having a full Windows PC in such a small form factor, but also stating that USB devices are not fully supported despite the promo materials.

Re: TPT2 has USB port power issue

FWIW I'm able to use external HDDs with the TPT2 by using a USB Y-cable and an external power source. The external power source can be the TPT2 AC adapter, a fully-powered USB port on another ThinkPad, a powered USB hub, etc.

Some configurations that I've used successfully.

1. A simple unpowered USB hub to power both the TPT2 and the external HDD using the AC adapter that comes with the TPT2. Since you're sharing the AC adapter's 5VDC/2A output, it will take a bit longer to recharge the TPT2.

2. A powered USB hub on the TPT2's USB port to share multiple high-power devices like HDD and DVD burner, etc.

3. A simple, unpowered USB hub on the TPT2's USB port to share multiple low-power devices like an external keyboard, mouse, flash drive.

You can buy a USB Y-cable like this inexpensively. Make sure all 3 plugs are standard-sized USB like the photo below. (Some Y-cables have a mini or micro USB plug at one end. You don't want them for this application.) The Y-cable I tested with came with the external enclosure that I'm using for the HDD. Both cost about $5 on eBay. Here's one source: USB 2.0 SATA 2.5" HD HDD Hard Disk Drive Enclosure.

A Y-cable, (un)powered USB hub and the TPT2 AC adapter will address most of the issues people are having with connecting and powering USB devices. I realize this isn't an ideal solution but it does work.

Re: TPT2 has USB port power issue

Running out of time for a return, but can anyone tell me which tablet out there fits the bill?

1. 10.1 inch

2. Windows 8/Pro

3. Digitizer

By the looks of things it seems the Latitude 10 may be my only option.

Wrote a review last week on the lenovo website, stating the lack of usb power, digitizer problem and the slim case not fitting the dock. Lenovo failed to publish it as I rated the product bad, looks like the review section is completely biased. I am starting to feel that lenovo isn't as reliable and trustworthy as they make out to be.

My review is also less  than glowing, and I don't expect to see it approved.  So far, they are only showing reviews marked  "yes" to the question about recommending to friends  and with a minimum of 4 out of 5 stars.

The noticeably poor English on some of the latest reviews makes me suspicious that Lenovo is having its employees post phony reviews.
