Re: TPT2 has USB port power issue

2013-02-19, 3:49 AM
Patanjali, I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I'm not talking about any device that comes with a Y cable. Such a device is clearly designed to use more power than the spec allows. I would NOT expect it to work on a device with only one USB port (such as a TPT2)--even though the DVD writers I have happen to work without using more than one port on my HP laptop. My guess is that HP has designed its USB ports on that machine to provide more power than the spec requires. Good for them. But I don't expect such a device to work on the TPT2.

On the other hand, all of the half-dozen hard disk drives I own come only with a regular cable--no Y adapter provided nor offered. That tells me that they have managed to figure out how to power the drive within the spec. And the fact that they work with EVERYTHING (except, I assume, the TPT2) tells me that they're far more likely than not within the spec. It would be insane to ship a hard drive without a Y cable that didn't meet the spec.

And it's insane for Lenovo to not meet the spec. Thankfully, most of the reviews mention this issue--often called out as one of the device's cons in a box at the top of the article, so no one can miss it. That will cause Lenovo to lose some sales; eventually they will fix the problem. I'm just hoping it's a driver problem so existing machines can be fixed.

It would be great if Lenovo would actually say what's up with this. I can't believe how unresponsive they are.

I have one Y cable which came with a very old IDE HDD enclosure. I connected one USB to an iPhone charge to power the HDD, and then plug another USB to the TPT2. The HDD was recognized and worked. I think disk drivers and 3.5 inch HDD that powered by external power adapter may work just fine on the TPT2.

Re: TPT2 has USB port power issue

After PaulJ333's post, I remembered one earlier post of jchammerpants in this thread quoting that Mark_Lenovo has stated in the WiFi issues thread that the TPT2 complies USB 2.0 specs fully, and he would update this thread here accordingly.

Has anybody seen this update (since 02-12-2013), yet? Or was this only a dazzle granade for the WiFi victims, that there are other problems "solved" while they have to wait?

I do find this odd, at least.

BTW: I have got in contact with usb.org about this problem gave them a link to this thread and suggested to evaluate TPT2's USB 2.0 compliancy, since they should be the "high court" for USB issues. I wonder if I or we will hear anything of them :smileywink:

I think that's not an easy post to make, for the essence would be something like 'we did it right, while everybody else violated the specs', and that would look pretty lame. Especially if you consider that TPT1 apparently worked with USB drives. Maybe Lenovo is waiting for how TPT2's closest competitor, the soon to be shipped Dell Latitude 10, will be doing.

I agree, but now that I check some of the forums it seems that they don't sticky 'technical problem' threads.

They prefer removing it completely, rather than making it sticky.

Can't say I blame 'em, as the company selling these devices!  :)  Honestly, I think they do a pretty commendable amount of 'fessing up' on these forums, despite the missing final response from Mark in this particular thread.

It did take too long to hear any confirmation that something was amiss, their engineers could have checked this in a few days. Or if it is by design, they could have said that in a day. For now the verdict is 'the TPT2 is performing up to spec', which may be fine for many, but not for all. Maybe you can quote Mark's response form the other thread in your first post, so people who come visit this forum don't have to read through 20 pages to find it.
