Re: TPT2 has USB port power issue

So I know this topic is old and I see no way to search the topic so i make a new post. I have a Western Digital my passport, and plugging into my tablet it DOES power up and I hear it spin, windows sees it in my devices but device manager says there is no driver and I can't get it to work at all. Is this somehow power related or something else?

Yes, it's a power problem. The drive draws more power than the TPT2 will provide.

There is a workaround above in pictures; I did one in text at the end of block 37. Both at your own risk.

I work for a large company and was given this device by our CTO team to re-image to our corporate standards. I've found that the usb port wont recognize any device - thumbdrives 1g, 4, 32, nor usb HDD. Same issue as I've seen on this forum. So basically since it wont recognize any usb device - its pretty much useless. I've tried usb hubs with no success.

If your TPT2 won't even work with lower-power devices (keyboards, mice, USB memory stickes), then it would appear you have a different problem than the design issue we're discussing here. As I understand it, and as my testing implied, a normally-functioning TPT2 will work with any USB device that draws 500mA or less (provided it has drivers, of course). Every USB HDD I've seen draws far more than 500mA despite the fact that the USB 2.0 standard only allows 500mA, so I wouldn't expect a HDD to work. But I would expect a memory stick to work fine, and they do on my machine.

I would certainly prefer that Lenovo had allowed USB devices to draw more than the standard allows, as most devices (tablets as well as laptops and desktops) do. But it is not an unreasonable design decision to limit the port to the standard, even if it's a hard decision to explain to customers.

I have not had ANY USB device fail to work with a powered hub.

I suspect that something is up in your re-imaging or that the unit you have has defective USB port hardware.

Yes, thanks. A mouse won't even work - the infrared lights up, but never is detected in the OS.

Could it be that the USB is disabled in the BIOS? The setting is in Security -> I/O Port Access.

Thanks Rick but that's the first thing I already checked. I think its a bad port.

Could be a software issue. Have you tried working with the Group Policy Editor to make sure nothing is inadvertently turned off? Also, is anything showing up wierd in your device manager?
