manuelcalavera,

Thank you for your explaination - I can appreciate the investment that you are making and the importance to you personally.

All,

We'll test some devices here and compare with what you have reported.  Thanks for all the detailed feedback.

Realistically, we'll need a couple of days on this.  I've just gotten the tablet and will gather up some different USB devices and work on this.  No, you didn't scare me off.  I'll stay involved on this one.

Mark

Mark's response indicates to me that Lenovo did not intentionaly limit the use of the USB port, so that a plus right there but getting it resolved may be a different story.

Thanks Mark - this is what is stopping me buying the TPT2 unfortunately - so your clarification on resolution will be much appreciated.

Re: TPT2 has USB port power issue

2013-01-09, 11:07 AM
I registered on this forum just to voice my opinion on this. I have been waiting somewhat patiently for this product to finally be released. I really felt that it may turn out to be the best device for me--a combination of low weight, good build quality, Windows Pro software and AD compatibility, active digitizer for note taking with a nicely implemented pen and receptacle, sweetened by the promise of long battery life. I was looking forward to being able to connect this device to almost any USB peripheral and have it work as expected, with no glitches or file corruption--just as one would expect with even the cheapest $200 netbook--something that I have yet to experience with the Android tablets that I own or have played with.

Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed to read that this product may have been released to market with such a glaring problem. If this proves to be a consistent, production-wide issue, it would mean one of three things:

1) When final testing was done, this issue was not caught before the product went to manufacturing

2) There is poor quality control at manufacturing and the product was allowed to ship with an unknown glitch (who knows, maybe just a small number shipped with this problem...)

3) Lenovo was aware of this issue, deemed it was not important enough to stop release of the product and shipped it anyway

None of these scenarios is in any way acceptable. I and many others have been waiting for what we were led to believe to be a groundbreaking, flagship product--fully worthy of the ThinkPad name. If it is just a software problem, that would be great. Fix it! I can only hope that this does not turn out to be a hardware design issue. If so, I sincerely hope that Lenovo will quickly find a resolution and also make things right with those who were brave enough to purchase in this first round.

For now, I'm glad I waited for a couple of reviews first. Just to be clear, I really want to buy this product, but not until we know that it actually functions fully as a Windows computing device. It would be sad if even my older, Tegra 2 powered android tablet can power a USB portable drive--and even charge my mobile phone--and this brand new Windows 8 computer cannot.

Earth, I'm with you on this. This is unacceptable; I'm thankful I didn't pull the trigger and waited for reviews. I need a portable tablet with loads of software installed from discs.

What is happening to Lenovo?

Re: TPT2 has USB port power issue

Supporting usb is an important feature. When I was traveling in the past 2 days, I found my tpt2 couldn't connect to public wifi in my hodel and in a mall. My iphone had no wifi connection problem in these places. I guess the wifi driver of tpt2 is not mature. I used to use usb wifi card to solve this kind of problem, but I couldn't do it on my tpt2. Really frustrated. Also, I won't be able to use usb 3g modem or usb microphone which are both important in some applications.

Maybe, designer make this issue on purpose! So, you guys can only buy their dock system to power up your high-powered peripherial devices. I am just guessing :D

Well it sounds like at least one person has a USB port that works...
