ThinkPad X1 Tablet - TPM Module not working

2018-05-13, 19:10 PM

Windows 10 Professional is now allowing me to use Bitlocker - saying that the device can't use a Trusted Platform Module.  My employer's policy settings do not allow BitLocker without a compatible TPM.

When I attempt to run the ThinkPad TPM Firmware Update Utility, it is erroring out saying that TPM is disabled in BIOS Setup.

When I enter the BIOS, I do not have options to enable the the TPM module.  I've looked under all of the Security options, and nothing close to security chip or TPM shows up.

How do I enable the TPM Module?

Bump.

I was told through an online chat session from Lenovo that I DO have a TPM module - but they couldn't help me with how to enable it...

If there's no security chip option in BIOS setup, then you don't have a TPM.

Except that Lenovo said my machine does have one.  If it's not showing up, does that mean it's defective?

It's a possibility, but usually if the TPM is defective, the machine won't boot.  Or else there will be some error message at every boot.

What is the Machine Type Model of your X1 Tablet?  You can get this information from BIOS Setup, on the Main -> System Information screen.

I edited your post to remove the serial number, which you should never post publicly.

I looked up your MTM and I agree, this model should have a security chip.  So something is wrong.

If the unit still has warranty, you should use it.  There are no software tools which can be used to fix this kind of problem.

This helped me too

Thanks.  Yes - still most of my 3 year warranty left - it's not much over 2 months old.  I'll open a case.

RSA Keys Generated by Infineon TPMs are Insecure

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/product_security/LEN-15552

The firmware update worked for me on 2018-05-25, so you may want to try again as the changelog says it was updated on May 24th.

On my brand new ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen, windows 10 defender said the TPM required a firmware update.  This is not an update you will receive by running Lenovo software update mechanisms.  It has to be downloaded and installed manually.
