Thinkpad Tablet 2 - First impressions

2013-01-02, 21:11 PM

I received the tablet via UPS on 12/31/12.

Writing this review on the TFT2 connected to a 3rd party Bluetooth keyboard (one I had laying around).

Build:
The exterior material is similar to Lenovo's Thinkpad notebooks (if you've
owned their notebooks before you know exactly what it will feel like).

When you pick up the TFT2, if feels solid and well built.   My wife picked
it up and look a look and immediately felt that it was a suppior build to
the W510.

Slim case is custom fitted to the TFT2 and snaps into place similar to the
iPad covers.  Again, it looks and feels very nice.  The only draw back is
that the propped positions cannot be adjust and I don't like the way the lid
has to slid into a notch/flap on the back of the cover.  It is a bit of work
to slide the cover underneath the notch.

Performance:
I've been very impressed with the Atom Clover Trail.   Flipping through the
different screens and apps is very snappy.   Videos formated for iPad HD
plays very well.   I did not notice any hesitations even during the high
action sequences.   Office 2010 runs well, have not heavily tested the
Office products.   Performed basic word processing and spreadsheets.
Planning to test some small Access databases and Filemaker pro databases
(will followup with later with results).

The screen is very sharp and crisp.  On the W510, I noticed that during
swips, you can see (for a lack of better terms) a white streak as you put
pressure against the screen.  The TFT2's screen is much less noticable and
you have to press fairly hard to see that streak.

I like the actual "Windows button" as opposed to a virtual button found in
other Win8 tablets.

I like the digitizer and pen.   It is especially helpful with some of the websites navigation menus.  without the pen, it was impossible to click on the menu item and select sub-menu item using the touchscreen.   but using the pen, is acts very much like a mouse.

I have also done some limited tests of writing on the TFT2 using the Skitch app and it seems to work very well.   The key is to activate the digitizer with the pen first before resting you palm on the screen, otherwise it will recognize the palm and create unwanted lines.

I have installed and ran Cisco's VPN software with great success.  I am able to run putty and am able to FTP files to UNIX servers (this is the main reason why I converted from iPad to a Win8 tablet).

Citrix web driven remote access software also runs very well.

I have not had any WiFi issues.   Once the TFT2 comes out of sleep it immediately reconnects to my WiFi.   No lags or limited connections.

Sound is good (you can't expect too much).

I love that fact that the TFT2 has a full size USB connector!

One last note, last note... I did a full windows update after install.   I also did not have to do any driver updates like the W510.

One final negative note, I experienced my first crash today.   I was trying to log back in to the TFT2 from sleep, I had my external Bluetooth KB connected and was trying to type my pwd, but not response via the KB or the virtual KB.  Had to shutdown and restart.

more to follow a bit later ...

Re: Thinkpad Tablet 2 - First impressions

Hi 1sTemp1ar,

Thanks a lot for this post!! Very interesting. I am considering buying the TPT2 as a student gadget, so I am mainly concerned with OneNote performance. I watched your youtube video on TPT2 pen input and have to say I looked kind of slow compared to my old convertible tablet pc.

Can you say anything about digitizer performance in OneNote? Especially as documents get bigger do we see a significant drop in performance?

Thanks!

I did some additional tests of the digitizer using oneNote and the response was much better.

Later today, I'll post another vid of the performance.

Hi, 1sTemp1ar,

Thanks for testing onenote inking. I am eager to see its performance. It is the killer application for me to buy TPT2.

BTW, if it is possible, I think onenote 2010 is a good choice to test inking. I saw people found inking delay with atom tablets on early onenote 2013 which may be differnt from the final version in the future.

Thanks I really appreciate your testing!! Ok so things look better in OneNote. How about temperature? Does it get warm quickly? This was annoying with the old convertibles which made writing longer (equation type) stuff unpleasant.
