I have not had any WiFi issues.   Once the TFT2 comes out of sleep it immediately reconnects to my WiFi.   No lags or limited connections.

Is there any way to keep WiFi connected (and e-mail/IM/incoming VoIP active) in sleep, like on Android devices? I thought Clover Trail was supposed to support connected standby...?

The same way your Thinkpad Tablet 1 does...

TPT1 has Android OS, you mean the problem is not OS related ?

...? Sorry, but I have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm referring to the fact that Windows 8 supports connected standby (like Android devices do - your TPT1 can stay connected to WiFi or 3G when it's in standby and receive e-mails, IM and so on either by polling or via push)... something that previous Windows versions did not. I'm wondering if it's actually possible to use this feature on the TPT2, as there are quite a few requirements the device needs to fulfill - having a TPM module, for instance...

I get what you're saying.

But I thought the owner said that it was not connected until he/she turned the screen on.

Exactly... that's why I want to know if he can find a way to activate connected standby - so that WiFi stays connected during sleep instead of needing to reconnect every time he turns it on ;)

Thanks -probably the most informative review on TFT2 I have seen so far on the web. Keep the observations coming please.

e.g how is the screen resolution? Any thoughts on whether the larger screen size of 11.6" that many other hybrid pcs/windows tablets are going for would be an improvement?

And did you get 3G - does it use micro SIM?

Thanks,

Re: Thinkpad Tablet 2 - First impressions

Concerning the email and sleep/standby mode:

From what I can tell, even in sleep/standby mode the device downloads the emails (I'm using the default Mail app).

When I wake the device and am at the lock screen, I can see a mail icon with a number of new emails.   On this device I have the following email setups (Exchange, IMAP, Gmail IMAP, and POP).

Granted, the Mail App is for a lack of better words... adequate at best.   There is no way to select multiple messages (that I could figure out) and the fact that it has very little options and configurability is annoying.   But with that said, it does the job (similar to the mail apps on the iPad, except you can select mulitple messages in iPad).

I did some testing with a filemaker pro database last night and I have to admit it ran snappy.   I did not see any noticable delays.

Keep in mind that FM Pro was the only app running during this test.

I don't think that this is a desktop or even a notebook replacement.   I view all tablets (TPT2, iPad, any Android) as a mobile enhancement.   As a system and database consultant, I am constantly on the road and performing my tasks on a tablet is a HUGE improvement from doing the same tasks on a phone. :)

I don't try to multitask if I don't have to realizing that it's a Clover Trail CPU with only 2GB of RAM.   Performing tasks 1 or 2 at a time has been a pleasant experience.   I try to close un-needed apps to preserve resources and battery life.   I feel that if you take this approach to using this tablet, you will be pretty happy with the performance.

To do a real test, I plan on running a fairly large Access Database on the device and run some large queries, will post the results and try to put up a quick vid of the response times.

catchtony, I got the WiFi version only. the 3G was not available in the US. Here is a slot, next to the micro-SD slot that looks like it's for a micro-SIM. I'm hoping that since the HW is present, that it can be activated at a later date with SW/drivers.

From all I read the 11.6" screen has higher RES, looking at the TPT2 10.1" screen, it's comparable to a non Retina iPad display. It does seem crisper and better than the W510 I tried for a few weeks.
