Re: Thinkpad Tablet 2 Wifi Issue

2013-01-18, 8:14 AM

@midnightwarrior:

I have the same problem. I tried to use usb wifi adapter Roseville RNX-N1 but tpt2 can't detect it because tpt2's usb has power issue. Does your Asus USB WiFi N Adapter work normally when pluging directly into tpt2? If yes, could you share the model of this usb wifi adapter? Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. It's true we are behind in updating our Cisco APs, but other Win 8 laptops do work.

Thanks again.

@sblsbl2

The device is on FedEx vehicle for delivery today, i'll test when I get home and send an update... It's a very small USB Dongle so hopefully it doesn't require much power? heh... i'm not sure.

I forgot about the USB power issue when I bought it, hopefully this device powers.

If not i'll have to return this tablet. Sitting in my living room, where the router is directly below me, maybe 10 feet away through wood floor my signal drops every 35 seconds or so, it's completly unusuable at that rate. I've tested on my work network using a Cisco SA520W router and the strength issue is also replicated there. Even worse though since the walls have metal framing, I almost have to be in the server room to get signal. Yet every other laptop/pc with a WiFi card is fine.

Also I did a few ping tests last night, from 15 feet away and about 5 feet. The speed is pretty poor around 15 feet, however when sitting very close to my router I get very quick 15/5 speed... seems the only issue here is range.

Re: Thinkpad Tablet 2 Wifi Issue

After some more research and testing I think I will return all these products. I am leaning toward the Dell Latitude 10. It seems like Lenovo just wanted to get something to market and threw this thing together. The WiFi seems to be a no brained, everything has WiFi and to have a device like this perform this bad is alarming. Now I read about USB not powering devices like storage. Their own blog (http://blog.lenovo.com/products/8-cool-things-about-the-thinkpad-tablet-2) says that with the tablet’s USB 2.0 port, you can connect phones, MP3 players and other tablets to charge them on the go. (What good is this much power if you can’t share some.)

So it seems they intended for this function, because the blog goes on to state Speaking of that USB port, you can connect a pen drive or even an external hard drive and copy your files directly to the tablet. Easily view files from a digital camera without the use of another PC.

Ok so I just installed the "Asus - Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter SKU: 2432682" I got from best buy. The Tablet did power the device and it installed properly.

It works flawlessy upstairs in my house, where the onboard Broadcom WiFi completly loses signal....

Kind of sad I had to buy a USB WiFi adapter to replace the unusuable onboard WiFi adapter...

I'll be contacting Lenovo support now to either get this unit fixed or find out some info... I really like the device otherwise... I dont really want to return it, i'm not picky but come on.

Is this just an isolated issue to the 10 of us or so on the forums? Is everyone else OK?

Re: Thinkpad Tablet 2 Wifi Issue

2013-01-20, 13:05 PM

I've tried everything to get the wifi working, but unless I am 2 feet or less from the router, the wifi gets dropped. As I tried to get it to work, a number of other issues arose.

- wifi not working

- after prolonged sleep, the tablet simply locks up and I have to force it to shut down and restart

- the right speaker is completely faulty, nothing but static comes out of it

- the red tip of the stylus is NOT an eraser. My 2 previous Lenovo tablets (X61 and X220) both had the red top erase, in fact if I use the stylus from the other computers it does erase, the one that came with this tablet does not.

For these and any possible future reasons I am returning the product

This is a heartbreaking decision since I've owned 5 Lenovo laptops in the past and have been very happy with them, but this product is nowhere near the quality of the others. To make things worse, this was a birthday gift for my wife, and out of the box it was a dissapointment. I can't afford to pay all this money for a faulty product that may or may not be fixed.

Just an FYI, when I called Lenovo tech support over this issue, they immediately set up an RMA. I don't know whether the company is acknowledging that this is a hardware issue, but they do not appear to be trying very hard to troubleshoot. They just replaced my tablet.

So for folks who have this issue, I woudl recommend calling Lenovo--I doubt a software fix, if one is possible, is forthcoming soon.

no it seems common. I called support. they told me it was a known issue no timeframe on resolution. They then gave me the sales number if I wanted to return it

Same issue with mine. WiFi range is around 10-15' in the open. But one wall and I'm bouncing around between one bar and disconnected. Cisco AP. I've got no issue with any other device, easily seeing 150' outside the house, through multiple walls.
