Thinkpad X1 Gen 3 intermittently freezing for few seconds

2019-02-15, 14:24 PM

So I bought the Thinkpad X1 Gen 3 hybrid a few months ago thinking that lenovo and particularly the Thinkpad series is ultra durable but after a while the computer just starts to freeze every few second during which the keyboard, mouse, touchscreen and even the bluetooth mouse stop responding. Then after a few seconds they start working again.

I have updated all the drivers one by one from the device manager and from the Lenovo vantage program nothing seems to work.

I have even reset windows twice already and that hasn't worked either.

I had read somewhere online that somebody had the same problem but their processor had spikes of activity during which their computer became unresponsive. However, this was not the case with mine.

I had a lot of hopes in the Thinkpad line and I am sorely disappointed by one of their flagship products.

Please, if anyone has any solutions please do share.

Did you check to see whether it was updating windows at the time of the freeze?

Yes, I did. Windows has been fully updated and still it is freezing.

And no, the computer freezes irrespective of whether there is an update going on or not.

Go into the Update and troubleshooting section and do the reset.

If that does not work it may be a hardware issue. But try that first. Since it was working fine for a few months i'm thinking something was installed that messed it up.

Hi, thank you for your response but I have laready reset windows 2 times to no benefit.

Hi Fabi123

Could I please ask of there is anything showing in the Windows System or Application Event logs that coincides with the freezing?

Might I also please ask the spec on your X1?

Thanks

Hi, Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I have the task manager on all the time and at least through it I have not noticed any specifc programs or processes running that might be coinciding with the freezes but I'm not too sure.

Spec: i5 8250u, 8gb RAM and 256 SSD.

If you have any advice how to deal with this problem then please feel free to share.

Hi Fadi123

Could I please confirm if you are checking the Event Logs as well as the Task Manager.

Event Viewer in Windows can be found by right clicking on the Start Button and selecting from the menu presented.

Once open you can expand "Windows logs" and view "System" and "Application" logs for event happening around the time your machine was freezing.

Thank you for your response.

Yes, I just opened the event viewer and checked whether there were any programs running in both applications tab and the sytem tab coinciding with the freezes during which there were a couple of freezes. And logically, if there was any new program running, it should be shown in those tabs right? Well I did not see any new programs start. The last program that started was a few minutes ago.

I could send post a screenshot here just to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong you would like to see...

Hi Fadi123

Could I please ask if the "System" or "Application" event logs showed any "Errors" during the time frame of the machine freezing? Possibly upto 30 seconds before the time of the freeze, during or briefly after?

If any errors show in the logs during those time periods they may be relelvent.

Thank you
