Thinkpad tablet 2 "does onenote lag?"

2013-03-10, 14:17 PM

hey guys! I was thinking of buying a thinkpad tablet 2 for using in lectures but I am not too sure about the performance of the TPT2. I want to use it for solely onenote and let my desktop do all the heavy lifting. How well does onenote handle on it? I want to print around 60 slide pdf lectures to onenote and annotate using ink. Will the tablet be able to perform this and not lag when scrolling up and down and with a lot of ink?

Should I wait for better processors to come out? I don't want to blow like a grand thou cos I am a student and like I said, I only wnat it solely for onenote.

Many thanks,

Daniel

Yes it does lag alot.

Basically, the processor is too slow.

From my experience.

doing a bit more research you can disable hardware acceleration and other things in the settings. will that help with the lag?

Thinkpad Tablet 2 comes with a forced "balanced" power profile. While using that profile and One Note 2013 desktop application, I get negligable lag. usually when the system is trying to do something else in the background. It is not the best multi tasker out there. When evertyhing is settled, no updates are being downloaded or nothing being written to storage space, there is almost no lag. Changing pens and colors and menu's are not as instanenous as Surface pro ( I owned one for a short period of time), but it is managable. The free One Note Metro app lags a lot and almost unusable for me, at least for inking purposes. It shows that the code behind the program has a lot to do with the lag or no lag, not just hardware.

Now I downloaed a program that allows you to force TP2 to work on high performance mode and will do more one note testing.

I am getting 10 hours 30 minutes of battery life with no noticable heat coming out of the device in an ipad size and weight package. It is pretty **bleep** good really. If it had %15 more processing power and a faster harddrive, it would be more than enough for %80 of all mobile computing users.

OneNote works perfectly for me, except that there is a camera usage conflict that so far prevents me from recording video while taking notes.  But, I really don't consider that a dealbreaker.

There is a OneNote app in the metro interface as well that syncs with SkyDrive.  I find it OK for taking brief notes on the fly, that then sync back to my desktop version via SkyDrive.  But in general I use the full desktop version.

hey guys!  thankyou for the quick responses!

so it can handle alot of inking?? I mean it won't freeze up if i ink say two a4 pages?

also should I wait for the haswell processors or helix because I am sure the price of the thinkpad will go down.

Re: Thinkpad tablet 2 "does onenote lag?"

If you have nothing else running, no major drag at all. I am using it daily for office meetings. I can type and write at will. This is using either of the two OneNote apps (Office 2013 desktop app and the Metro Store OneNote app). I tend to use the Metro app in meetings (quicker UI) and then use the desktop app to clean up notes. Some things are slower (converting ink to text for example - a desktop only feature), but performance is quite good.

I think the issue here is not one of CPU speed, but of design. The ATOM processor was designed to only run one application at a time. It's CPU has a number of features that only perform best when a single application is running: "in order" instruction execution, limited caches, etc. If you leave multiple programs running (and they are trying to do something) *any* ATOM-based computer will slow to a crawl. If you quick everything else (very easy in Windows 8 with the swipe-down action) and just run one-thing at a time, you will the machine runs as fast as desired.

So back to your task at hand. If you want to strickly use OneNote to take ones and such, it will work great. If you want to do that while it is printing, downloading, etc. then you may need a faster powered tablet (Helix, Surface Pro, etc.).
