Re: Windows 8.1 Bluetooth crashing issue

2013-10-28, 14:53 PM

I think that you're looking at the Bluetooth and Network Adaptor sections - and they show the Microsoft drivers (6.3.9600.16384) dating from 2006 on my TPT2 as well. I think that this is perfectly normal.

The section that you should be looking at is in System devices: the Broadcomm Serial Bus Driver over UART Bus Enumerator. Now, interestingly, my driver shows as version 12.0.0.8020, while on the Lenovo drivers site, an earlier version is shown: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS033065#systems

However, I think I've installed an optional Broadcomm driver that was offered via the Microsoft Windows Update site, so that probably accounts for it.

Thanks gcoupe. I've checked that Broadcom driver and already have 12.0.0.8020 installed dated 18/9/2013, so that doesn't seeem to be the cause of the problem.

Re: Windows 8.1 Bluetooth crashing issue

2013-10-29, 12:01 PM

Further to this, I have been familiarising myself with the Windows Event Viewer and have found a smoking gun of sorts.

Just to recap - experience is that on cold boot, Bluetooth to my MS Wedge keyboard works fine. If I then put the TPT2 into standby by closing the cover or pressing the power button, on coming out of standby the Bluetooth connection to the keyboard is lost. Additionally, clicking the Bluetooth tray icon results in the settings app displaying a white screen, then crashing back to the Start screen after about 10 secs. It is not possible to turn Bluetooth on or off as the settings function to do that also crashes.

This is a screenshot of entries in the event logs:

As you can see, there is an error on BthMini  which I'm guessing is the Bluetooth adapter saying it has timed out. I can repeatably trigger this error after exiting standby by clicking the Bluetooth icon on the system tray and clicking "Show Bluetooth devices". You can see the error above that one which is the Settings application crash.

So - I'm now at the limits of my knowledge. It looks like the BT adapter isn't coming out of standby which is causing the problem.

Any clues folks?

Thanks

Re: Windows 8.1 Bluetooth crashing issue

I'm afraid that this appears to be an ongoing issue. It's been reported before in the forum:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-slate-tablets/TPT-2-Bluetooth-Connection-Unstable/td-p/1204368

What is frustrating is that Lenovo staff state that they are investigating the issue, but there have been no results thus far. What is also odd is that it appears to affect some, but not all, TPT2 hardware.

Last ditch suggestion: uninstall the Bluetooth drivers installed via Windows Update, and go back and reinstall the drivers issued by Lenovo: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS033065

Thanks again gcoupe. I'm familiar with that other thread, but my case is a bit different.

Prior to the 8.1 upgrade, I had a rock solid BT connection. Post 8.1 upgrade is has hit these issues coming out of standby which are reliably reproducable.

I'll try those other drivers. Sigh..... :-(

Re: Windows 8.1 Bluetooth crashing issue

Still investigating this one following no success with updates etc. I'm going crazy trying to sort this out as it is massively frustrating.

Coming out of standby, right clicking the Bluetooth tray icon and clicking show bluetooth devices causes the Settings app to crash with the following message, which indicates a hang on BthServEp which I'm guessing is the thing that hasn't restarted after coming out of standby and is causing all the problems.

Any clues how to investigate this further and find out waht BthServEp is doing?

Did you make any further progress with this? I'm experiencing the exact same beahviour on a B590 laptop with the exception that my BT just stops working intermittently. It's not triggered by standby, just seems to stop communicating with the OS. When it does, I get the identical symptoms you describe. White screen with an unresponsive BT section of the PC Settings. Sometimes it comes back on it's own & sometimes I have to reboot.
