X12 Detachable Fn/Ctrl Key Swap, FnLock issues

2021-03-11, 4:51 AM

The option to swap the Fn and Ctrl keys no longer appears in BIOS or in the Think BIOS tool which had been the solution for previous tablets.

The latest Commercial Vantage displays the option to swap keys (but it doesn't do anything) in 10.2102.10.0

Also, if the F1-F12/Special Function default behavior is reversed in Vantage, an external keyboard is needed to hit F1 to enter BIOS as FnLock will be enabled on boot and you will have no way to disable it.

Hello dustland.crow!

Greetings

Can you provide to us a screenshot of the system information, with the OS version and BIOS version on it?
And also, could you provide to us the machine type model of your machine so we could check some details?

Let us know.

Thank you for the information. Not sure if that feature is available for this unit but I will get back to you on that.

Would be a pretty massive oversight if this one Thinkpad out of all others can't do a key swap...

Well, I got two weeks before I must return it as this is a dealbreaker. Starting the timer.

Unfortunately, I have not received any update yet but personally, I am not confident that this is supported due to the design but as long as I receive an update, I'll get back to you.

Care to elaborate? The previous Thinkpad tablets all had detachable keyboards that, at least for keyboard's onboard controller, were connected via USB. I don't see how this is any different.

Re:X12 Detachable Fn/Ctrl Key Swap, FnLock issues

Well, the support ticket I opened earlier today has gotten some attention. Unfortunately they have decided to ship me a replacement keyboard cover, which I don't think will resolve a software issue and is in any case, out of stock.

In the absence of an official solution, it may be necessary to roll custom firmware. The keyboard came from the factory with revision 3326 and there is a tool to update it to 3330. By itself this didn't fix the problem, but during the upgrade process the tool does create a BIN file containing the firmware and tell us that there is a Nuvoton M032SE3AE ARM Cortex M0 microcontroller onboard. It may be possible to disassemble the firmware and swap the key function from there. Of course, this will probably void the warranty and carries a not insignificant risk of bricking the thing, but well...extremis malis extrema remedia.

I didn't have any luck disassembling the file into anything sensible, but I leave this information behind for those who might follow. This has been successfully done before on another USB keyboard that Lenovo didn't want to provide a keyswap solution for, the original Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard.
