X1Tablet, BIOS 1.57, Windows 10: No Standby (S0-S3 states not supported)

2016-12-05, 13:03 PM

Since updating my X1 Tablet to the latest drivers & BIOS today, Standby has not been available anymore.

I'm running Windows 10 Build 14393, and I updated the BIOS to 1.57 along with all other relevant drivers available as of today (2016-12-05).

powercfg -a claims that the firmware does not support S0-S3 states, but there is no way to enable those in the UEFI.

Please help?

PS C:\Windows\system32> powercfg -a
The following sleep states are available on this system:
    Hibernate
    Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
    Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Standby (S3)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)

    Hybrid Sleep
        Standby (S3) is not available.

And that's why I waited for official announcement for the BIOS update from Lenovo when Windows came up with their Windows Anniversary update edition for Windows 10 - when it started not working due to conflicts with the windows OS

I will rather wait until I see more reports - or ask any mods if there is a fix out there for you

It's not like the anniversary update wasn't working before. It's only been with this latest round of driver/bios updates that I've lost standby.

NetSoerfer,

Lenovo included a number of changes in BIOS v1.57 for the X1 Tablet, including changes to Sleep Mode S3, to support Windows 10 design guidelines for Modern Standby.

For more information about Modern Standby, please see these articles:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/mt282513(v=vs.85).aspx

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/mt614848(v=vs.85).aspx

As a result, Lenovo recommends checking your settings to enable Sleep Mode S0.

Thank you,

Re: X1Tablet, BIOS 1.57, Windows 10: No Standby (S0-S3 states not supported)

Amy,

thanks for your reply. It provided some appreciated insight into Modern Standby.

After some further research, I am left wondering though: Before BIOS v1.57, I was able to use 'Legacy Standby (S3)' instead of Modern Standby by setting

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\CsEnabled=0

Since BIOS v1.57, this setting appears to prevent standby altogether:

powercfg -energy

results in an error stating that S3 is not supported.

I had previously disabled Modern Standby using the above registry setting in Windows 10 since I found it to be broken and consume too much energy. Legacy Standby (S3), while older and less capable, seems far more robust.

Is there still a way to disable Modern Standby without losing the ability to send the tablet to 'Legacy Standby', or has that option been removed with BIOS v1.57?
