thinkpad x1 tablet charging

2016-08-25, 19:00 PM

usb-c should be backward compatible also what comes to charging. I tried to charge the tablet with usb-c to usb usb-a cable and 2A charger. It didn't worked like expected. Should it be possible to charge this with usb-a usb charger?

I also tried to chrage my X1 tablet (20GG) with alternative wall charger (5V, 2.1A) with USB 3 - USB Type C cable (1.8m length) with no success. No any sign of charging peocess!

There are several aspects:

- Cable is too long or qualtily is poor => device is not charging due to losses

- Power of wall charger is not enough (not likely)

- Lenovo applied some tricks to disable USB charging compatibility (most likely)

From attached picture you can see that Lenowo charger (45W power) declared to supply 3 V/A nominals. How it can be applied to standard USB type C plug?

Does anyone have an idea how to overcome Lenovo limitations and be able to charge X1 Tablet from powerbank while traveling?

I'm successfully charging my X1 Tablet with this multi charger from Anker, through a Belkin USB-C to USB-C cable: https://de.anker.com/products/A2053311

I have however other troubles with connecting my X1 Tablet with an external monitor  through USB-C, see my question on https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Tablets/Can-t-get-exernal-monitor-working-with-ThinkPad-X1-Tablet/td-p/3597713 - help appreciated.

I had the same issue with my Lenovo X1 Tablet (1st gen).

Here the results of my test:

5v1A - does not charge

5v2.1A - does not charge

5v5.7A (Motorola 28.5W USB-C adapter 5912A) - does not charge

12v1.5A (Quick Charge 3.0 pwer bank) - does not charge

14.5v2A (Apple 29W USB-C adapter from Macbook 2015) - charges

20v2.25A - charges, same specs as original charger

Further, the X1t is also very finicky when it comes to cables. I was unable to charge from the Apple 29W USB-C adapter when using the Google Pixel cable - although a Macbook Pro would happily charge off the same.

To me the Apple 29W USB-C power brick is the best option for my X1t as I can use an adapter and then also charge my cellphone.

Can you tell me which cable will work with x1t? All the cables I tried seem only marginally working.

FWIW, I just purchased an Elecjet "any watt" Lenovo square to USB-C converter adapter off amazon:

I will report my results when I have tested this adapter

I bought these cables in March 2018 (duo-pack for $8.99) and they have been working fine so far:
