I have a user that wants to install a single 16G DIMM. I have tried it in slot 0, but the system only recognizes 8G. Is there a setting I can change to get it to recognize 16?

Are u sure the sodimm is 16gb. I was not aware that ddr3 was even available in that size.
That being said, there is no switch supporting larger then 8gb sodimm ddr3 memory.

I agree with SMG47. The X220 hardware can not recognize anything over 8Gb of RAM.
Here is what is stated in the memory portion for the X220 in the PSREF:
8GB max / PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3, non-parity,
dual-channel capable, two 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets
Here is the link to this information: http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf
On the left side of the screen are the bookmarks, you can scroll down to the X220 section where the above information is located.
So even if you replace the 4Gb stick with a 16Gb stick the computers System Board will only recognize and be able to use the Maximum 8Gb capacity.
Hope this helps,

Actually to avoid confusion the x220 can recognize a maximum of 16gb memory provided the memory is divided into two 8g sodimms. Lenovo's documentation was created before 8gb ddr3 were available. I currently have 2x8GB sodimms in my x220 and all 16gb are recognized.

specs for the SODIMM sticks
From PSREF, "PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3, non-parity, dual-channel capable, two 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets."
You can install faster, PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 RAM but it will run only at 1333MHz.
