Model: Thinkpad X1 Yoga (2016), 20FR
Error message: 2100 Detection error on Storage Device (M.2).
Note this is not deterministic. Sometimes it shows up when you boots the laptop; sometimes it doesn't.
I have had this problem for a long time and have sent the machine to Lenovo twice.
The first time: Lenovo claimed no problem with the drive and just did a clean Windows install.
The second time: same problem. Lenovo replaced my LiteOn SSD to a Samsung SSD.
Now the problem happens again. I have no luck in talking to any support agent this time.
My impression is that this machine is in fact defective.
Any help is appreciated.

I have this on a brand new yoga x1 gen 2. about every third boot. Event viewer shows no errors like I would expect on a failing hard drive.
this is a client machine located 30 miles from our support center and it's a real pain that if we remotely install something that needs a reboot we have to send a tech out there to physically restart it again.
maybe this is a case of the bios moving on quicker than storage can come online? maybe a little wait period added to the bios could fix this. I know everyone wants the fastest boot but a 50ms wait would be better than 1/3 of the boots failing. my client is very unhappy about this and thinks the laptop is a pile of crap because it's already broke.

I was able to fix the problem for my case by removing the SSD, carefully cleaning the contacts, and then re-attaching it. Maybe the attaching screw just gets loose over time?

@Guentha Did re-attaching the SDD work?
I get this Error too. When restarting I sometimes see the Error. And furthermore I rarely get a BOS in Win10 with this Error afterwards.

It did seem to work. I pulled the drive and cleaned the contacts really well with a cotton swab and some rubbing alcohol. Then replaced it, making sure it was seated well. The socket is a little weird compared to most m.2 slots. It doesn't fully seat untill it's almost flat and the socket seemed really deep.
Long story short I haven't seen the issues since.

I have a 20FR, got it back in March/April 2017. Within a few months I got a BSOD, then detection error message with the 256GB SSD that comes with the 20FR. I got a 512GB ssd as a replacement (Samsung 961 M,2). Today I got the 2100 detection error when waking from sleep and saw it several times when I tested restarts with and without plugging in the laptop.
I just did the clean contacts and secure the screw SSD method mentioned here. My 20FR booted up successfully and woke from sleep just fine. Hopefully it will stay that way for a while until I have to do this over again. Sounds ridiculous but if it works so be it.

And the issue is back. Its crazy to me that if you google around a bit this has been happening for like 8 years. Lenovo cant get their stuff together enough to fix major issues affecting many product lines?
I personally can deal with restarting to get it to come up but what do I tell all my customers we bought these for? they think we got them pieces of crap because they break all the time and we look like fools because we don't have an answer to how to fix this.
