2019 X1 Yoga 4th Gen discussion thread

Lenovo announced the X1 Yoga 4th gen at CES this January, so let's start a thread discussing the brand new version!

ThinkPad-X1Yoga-A_1600x900.pngThinkPad X1 YOGA

The biggest change is that it no longer has a carbon fiber body with matte black coating. Instead Lenovo changed the X1 Yoga to use milled aluminum with a dark gray finish. It still looks great though. Available June 2019, starting price $1930.

Comparison with the 2018 3rd gen model:

Improved
- smaller side bezels, 17% smaller footprint
- aluminum casing, which should eliminate issues related to paint flaking issues
- the fan appears to have its main vent on the side, better for lap use
- Lenovo now supports a Windows Hello IR camera AND the thinkshutter
- there's a new combo docking port that has an embedded TB3 port
- reported to have better speakers (Dolby ATMOS)
- now up to 2TB SSD installed

Unchanged
- the screen aspect ratio is still 16:9 with large lower bezel
- no OLED option
- no discrete graphics option
- weight still ~3 lbs (reports range from 2.98-3.09lbs)
- still no volume rocker (needed in tablet use)
- it still can't be opened one-handed (see hands-on video at 0m50s)

Worse (personal opinion)
- the keys no longer retract (and lock?) in tablet mode
- seemingly no SD or microSD card reader

Re: 2019 X1 Yoga 4th Gen discussion thread

For me Lenovo is always just 1 step from what I want.  For example.

1st Generation X1 Yoga--I really wanted IR camera and wigig(announced but not available in the US)--couldnt get either in the US

2nd Generation X1 Yoga--I really wanted IR camera and IRIS graphics(announced and never released plus no news for months even though website and sales just kept saying will be available later for IRIS)-IR was released in Europe

3rd Generation X1 Yoga--I really wanted IR camera(finally released in US) AND HDR screen--couldnt get both I settled for HDR screen.

Now 4th gen finally gets us HDR screen and IR camera but now we lose lift/lock/wave keyboard.  If it had what I wanted I would have most likely bought it and sold my X1Y3.  Hopefully the fingerprint reader works better.  Even with updates the X1Y3 fingerprint scanner is just plain bad especially compared to my TP25 or even my W510.  The W510 swiper works  for me 95% of the time.  The X1Y3 takes me more than 1 attempt at least 50% of the time. 10% of the time 1 attempt.  40% of the time I need to use pin.

None of the 4 generations had discrete graphics options or volume rocker like you mentioned plus the issues mentioned above(for me.  Might not apply to other people.)  Again its always not exactly what I'm looking for and I have to settle.

Just noticed that there's a Lenovo Unboxed video of the new X1C and X1Y by our favorite Lenovo presenters. Kevin and Gavin; "hungover bloated and happy as could be" at CES Smiley Happy

Re: 2019 X1 Yoga 4th Gen discussion thread

Based on a leaked product roadmap it looks like we're getting a new and redesigned ThinkPad Yoga 390 in May, before the release of the X1 Yoga 4th gen.

I'm very curious how the X390 will compare to the X1Y4. The X380 was already super close to the X1Y3, with almost the same screen size, basically the same weight, with the biggest difference imo that it didn't offer a 500nits HDR screen. Personally I hope the redesigned X390 keeps the classic black coating* and replaces the dim 16:9 screen with a bright 3:2 screen.

* assuming they improve the adhesion of the black paint

Re: 2019 X1 Yoga 4th Gen discussion thread

Since I have the X1Y3, I really have no interest in purchasing the Y4. However, I have to say that an aluminum body sounds kind of nice. I like the way the black X1Y3 looks, but it is a fingerprint nightmare. I have to believe the aluminum would be much more forgiving.

Re: 2019 X1 Yoga 4th Gen discussion thread

Good for lunchbreak viewing: an overview of the X1 Yoga 4. No new info, but it gives a better look at the device from all angles, and a better sense of how dark that aluminum really is. Also note that the speaker grille is between the hinges. Probably good for loudness (not muffled), but possibly not as good for stereo width.

Re: 2019 X1 Yoga 4th Gen discussion thread

So we won't be able to get it until June?

How is it compared with the Yoga C930 which also has a 4K screen and is available now? I like the retractable keyboard of the X1Y3 but X1Y4 won't have it. Also, the battery life is shortened. I wonder if I should wait for the X1Y4 or get the C930 now.

That's right, June at the earliest apparently. As for the C930, I hadn't looked at it closely, but it seems remarkably similar. Almost the same screen size (not sure about brightness), almost the same weight. Main difference: no trackpoint, so if you want that the C930 is out. Given the issues with trackpoint drift I had I'm not sure I'd miss it.. The X1 Yoga 4 has one extra USB3 port, as well as HDMI, which the C930 doesn't have. There's some pretty good deals on the C930 right now, looks like it might be a winner.

Re: 2019 X1 Yoga 4th Gen discussion thread

Sad Lenovo did not offer an OLED option like the GEN2. I know Lenovo had problems with the OLED screens (I have replaced mine twice) but nothing compares to how the OLED looks. Was holding out with hopes Lenovo worked the bugs out of the OLED display in the GEN2 but looks like I will be nursing my GEN2 for another year. Sad as DELL is offering OLED displays in thier new XPS. Again... Lenovo 'ALMOST' nailed it. PLEASE offer the OLED again.
