2018-08-02, 21:38 PM

Hi

after installing the fw Update  update for the hdd controller offered by lenovo vantage driver support automatically my x1 Carbon Touch fails to start with error above.

it starts very slowly, i can get access to bios after est 10 minutes. I tried to clear tpm chip, no change.

Wht can I do? This is a business notebook and I need it for work very urgent.

best regards

Contact support, the drive will likely need to be replaced.

EDIT - I believe we have recovered all of the drives that were bricked by the bad firmware update during August 1-4, 2018.  If you started seeing a 2100 error after August 4, the problem is something different.  Please use your warranty and contact Lenovo to request a drive replacement.

All,

We are very sorry for this SSD firmware update problem.  We confirmed that we are able to recover the drive and make it work again, but this process has to be done in our lab because special hardware is needed to do the recovery.  All of the data on the drive is still there, it's just a firmware bug which makes the drive not boot up, so then the PC is not able to access the drive.

If you still have the non-functional drive, and want to get the drive working again, please send me a private message with the following information:

1.  Your full name (first and last)

2.  Your e-mail address

3.  Your location (e.g., city/state/country)

4.  Your PC model number and serial number.  This can be found on the barcode sticker on the bottom of your PC (sometimes, under the battery) or in BIOS setup.

We are still working out the details of how this process will work, but I've been asked to collect this information from our customers who need to recover their drives.

If you don't need to recover the drive, then you can just request warranty service and they should be able to replace the drive with a new one.

Again, we are sorry for this trouble.

This helped me too

Did that. They replaced the SSD, so... problem solved.

Not the happiest situation though... it feels wrong to have such a high value product and still have issues like these.

Got a new SSD, downtime due to issue 10 days. How can this downtime be avoided? i expect faster solutions in cases like this.

meanwhile i used a ssd from a seond x1 carbon. in the past we have been an awsp by ourselves. today i am only a user, and lenovo users expect to get better and faster support in case of breakdowns compared to other vendors.

Best Regards, Ralf

I have precisely this error on a X1 Yoga (2nd Gen, I believe). As a matter of fact, I am just having it for the third time -- and the computer is not even a year old. First time in March, SSD was replaced (yes, several days downtime). Second time in May, SSD and mainboard were replaced. And now as of yesterday, the error is back a third time. It is extremely frustrating. And let me just say that the computer is handled with extreme care, actually barely leaves the house, no scratch, no dent (if that even matters).

The Lenovo Vantage app keeps notifying me I have to update the firmware for the SSD (which I have already done an ended up with the above mentioned problem). Is it safe? Should I update it and risk another SSD meltdown, another trip to the service, days of lost productivity?

The bad SSD firmware update was removed from System Update on August 4, and replaced by a new SSD firmware update that doesn't cause the problem mentioned here.  But just to double check, what is the brand and model of SSD in your computer?  You can find this information in Device Manager -> Disk Drives
