32/64 Bit X201?

I'm thinking about buying a Lenovo x201 (or t410) from eBay as there seems to be some good deals on brand new boxed machines.

Both models are available with either 32bit or 64bit operating systems.

Am I right in saying that both these models will support a 64bit system?

Wondering that if I buy a 32bit installed OS one I can install 64bit OS.

I'll be hauling out the HD anyway (to replace with SDD) so will have to replace OS anyway and have win7 64bit discs.

Re: 32/64 Bit X201?

Oh, another question.

In adverts for x201 on ebay they usually state that partitions can be got from lenovo if the laptop is still in warranty.

How does one get the partitions? Are they downloaded from Lenovo site or sent as CD?

Re: 32/64 Bit X201?

Yes the CPU on the X201 supports both the 32 bit and 64 bit operating system.

If you are talking about the recovery partition, then you would need to purchase the recovery media from Lenovo (either 32 bit or 64 bit can be obtained) provided you are in warranty. It is not downloadable.

Re: 32/64 Bit X201?

Both will support a 64-bit operating system.

If you don't plan on using more than 3GB of RAM, I'd go with a 32-bit install.

W520: 2960XM, Q2000M @ 1091/1380, 32GB RAM, 500GB&750GB HDD & 500GB SSD, FHD&MB168B+
X61T: L7500, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, XGA screen, Ultrabase
W550s: 5600U, K620M at 1164/1281, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 3K touchscreen
X200s: SL9400, 6GB RAM, 64GB SD card, WXGA+ screen

Re: 32/64 Bit X201?

Is it a specific lenovo recovery partition?

If I buy a x201 with serial for 32/64bit win 7 pro then cant I use win7 pro discs I already have?

If not, then how much is the recovery media from lenovo? anyone know off-hand?

I'm going to be using the machine for music production and live situations using Ableton Live so will definitely be putting in a 64bit as i'll be using more than 3gig of ram. Going to be putting ram right up to 8gig and putting in a Solid State Hard Drive too for extra speed and power.

Re: 32/64 Bit X201?

if you buy a X201 with win 7 pro serial, you can install a Win 7 pro edition OS on your system.

You would only need to buy the recovery media, if you want the recovery partition.

Re: 32/64 Bit X201?

Great, thanks for the reply. I see now!

So I only need the recovery media if i want a recovery partition.

The only real benefit would be not having to resinstall all OS and drivers etc if anything should happen to the HD. Yeah?

One extra question.

If i buy a machine with a win7 pro 32bit sticker on it, can i install the 64bit OS from the disc I have for win7pro 64 without needing a serial for 64bit?

Thanks

that is correct.

The serial number works for both 32 bit and 64 bit.

Re: 32/64 Bit X201?

I know this is an old topic, but I have a similar situation.  Last year I was running a program that ran into memory limits with on my X201.  I maxed out the memory to 8 MB, but then discovered that Window 7 32 bit would not use more than 4 MB.  So I contacted Lenovo about upgrading to the 64 bit Windows 7.   They said the easy was was to buy the recovery disk(s?).  So I ordered them, but got busy on other things and never got around to doing the install.  But now I am back to running the program that needed the memory.

So I hunted around and found the packing slip for "IBM Recovery CD" but I only find one CD - labeled disk 2 of 2.  Did I misplace a disk somewhere or is this all I need?  I don't want to render my X201 inoperable (even if my X60 that I'm typing this on gets more use).  Can you advise?

Thanks
