512GB SSD for ThinkPad X230?

2012-10-23, 16:08 PM

I'm considering making the switch to a ThinkPad X230, but I need big storage space (right now I keep a HDD in the Ultrabay of my T420s).  Can anyone recommend some 512 GB SSD options?  I want quality and reliability and a good warranty.  I wish Lenovo offered one as I prefer to keep the all the parts backed by Lenovo, but in this case they offer no option so I have to look elsewhere.

I have done some searching and the new Samsung 840 Pro Series looks good:

http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MZ-7PD512BW

There is also an older Samsung 830 Series, and I believe Crucial makes a 512GB option as well.

Also, if I add a mSATA SSD under the palm rest, could Lenovo really deny me warranty on unrelated issues in the future because of that?  I buy 3-year and 4-year on-site warranties on my machines (and I have used them), so I do not want to jeapordize my warranty.

Intel is know for having extra reliable SSDs

Crucial M4 are also reliable (got one myself)

Be sure to get a 7mm thick, not a standard one (9.5mm) or it wont fit

Intel, Samsung and Crucial all make reliable SSDs and you won't go wrong with any of them.

Can Lenovo deny you warranty service? Of course they can. Will they? Who knows.

Let's look at this calmly and reasonably. Let's not look at the US' Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act which doesn't apply here.

x230's are sold in different markets with an mSATA drive and we know from discussions here that they work when using the WWAN slot - so an argument could be "I only added what is sold in a different market and is actually referenced in the owner's manual."

They can, of course claim that the mSATA damaged something else or that you shouldn't have installed it because it wasn't a CRU, but only you can decide if you want to take that chance.

Of course if you break something when you install it then that would clearly be on your dime.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that using an mSATA is safe and won't cause problems but technically it may cause warranty woes.

Whenever you make any sort of mod (to a computer, a car, whatever) you need to ask yourself "am I emotionally and financially prepared to pay for any damages my mod causes (or the manufacturer said it caused) if the manufacturer denies a warranty claim?"

Crucial m4's are really a great SSD - I recommend this for size + price + relaibility - can't go wrong there.

I have an Samsung 830 256Gb, bought it because all other brands had issues with older than 2011 mac (my previous computer was a late 2009 macbook).
Works without problems.
Go to amazon and see how much bad reviews each SSD you have in your wishlist, then choose wich one has less bad reviews..
My conclusion was that intel and samsung are the best, but intel had bugs with older macs so I bought the samsung, since you don't have a mac, choose the cheapest :P

Hello Veechee,

I'm considering doing exactly the same 2 things as you: buying Samsung SSD 840 MZ-7PD512BW for my X230 and optionally installing mSATA SSD under the palm rest. Could you please share your experiences? How does your Samsung SSD performs on your X230? Did you manage to install mSATA SSD under the palm rest? Does it work ok?

Thanks!

I am typing on an X220 I7 2620 with a Samsung 830 SSD 256GB, a Crucial mSATA SSD 256GB, and 16GB Crucial RAM.  Installation instructions for each component are widely available.  I bought this 4287 off the Outlet and upgraded everything in the summer of 2012.  When a decent 512GB SSD presents itself at a good price (like maybe this fall), I intend to swap out the 256.  I'm looking at The Samsung 840 Pro or its successor.

Speccy readings just now:  39 degrees C on CPU, 40 degrees C on motherboard.

Doug

Micron has announced the M500 SSD series for both 2.5 form factor and mSata. The mSata card will be available in capacities up to 480GB, the 2.5 for factor up to 960GB. Micron prices are usually below those of Samsung.
