9.5mm hard drive on X1?

2011-05-27, 23:35 PM

Can anybody tell whether it is possible to install a 2.5inch 9.5mm(normal size) SSD on X1?

I noticed that the original factory-installed hard drive on X1 is a 7mm one which is more slim than the normal ones.

So I just wanna ask is it possible to install a normal 9.5mm SSD on it?

If it's 7mm, then its that way for a reason.

You can't install a 9.5mm SSD in a 7mm bay, unless you void the warranty and remove the covers and simply slide in the PCB holding the chips, taking care to insulate the PCB.

Some of the Intel SSD drives are easily converted from 9.5mm to 7mm.

This is true for the X-25M and Series 320 drives.  Those drives have a plastic spacer on top that is easily removed.  The only gotcha is having the shorter screws that are then needed.

Remove the bottom cover and slide in the PCB? Will there even be a room for a 2.5inch SSD?? That sounds weired coz why would the designer leave such a big space empty??

Did you mean the ultrabay? I checked the specs of all series and found that the x series do not have the modular ultrabay like the T series except for the x220 which has support for the ultrabay slim devices in the optional ultrabase.
Anyway, I think you are right, the 7mm hard drive is there for a reason, even if I can slide a 9.5mm hard drive into the bay, it may cause unexpected problem....I'll probably sell the 9.5mm SSD in hand.

Re: 9.5mm hard drive on X1?

Seems lots of people are wondering about the NEWER 7' high HDD .....

am no EXPERT....however I have these these newer fandango's ,,,,,, X220 and EdgeE520... And successfully REPLACED and tested these( two models I can confirm) WILL RUN THE 9.5' HDD.

I normally CLONE the "factory drives'  and keep them for SAFE STORAGE  and run the cheaper 9' drives @ home use machines.

Since  these machines are prone to spillages ,,, and get ABUSED A LOT - 'activeX /virus/ Java codes/malware installs etc etc (understatement of decade for teens)  I normally refresh them via MY HOME NETWORK (easily done if you have some basic knowhow) and they good to go in few mins ,,,,,, and speed is negliagble differences from 7 to 9" HDD;s........

One off these machines (edge I think - not sure as I often travel and don't relay remember - old age memory loss :P:LOL) I have installed the newer HDD+ SSD 'hybrid drive.... And the machines boots up in sub-15 sec boot time!!!!

I got these drives on 'specials' for around 70$US ,,,,,,, from here ( nope I don't work for them nor anyways connected )

Hope these comments/observations helps someone

Cheers

PS - awaiting my i7 X1 to ships - which I haven been waiting for shipment from LeNOooovo  since June ,,,,,,,,, now online status says ,,,, expected 09/08/2011....... EEEK !!!  maybe an aussie got conFUuuuuused with Sept delivery for June order for a "stnd product' delivery of 5-10 working days from China to USA  !!!
