9-cell battery problem on X220

Dear All,

I am facing this problem. I have just purchased a new genuine Lenovo 9-cell battery for my 3 year old X220.  It is verified with the Lenovo power manager and all relevant battery information were displayed correctly.

However, the battery is being charged at constant 0.17A and taking forever to charge up.  The battery reset procedure was aborted after 24 hours.

When I put my original 6-cell battery inside and the charging Amp varies according to the level of the battery. I have tried downgrading BIOS, removing Lenovo Power Manager and driver. There is no improvement.

The vendor was kind enough to let me test the new 9-cell battery on other units of X220, X230 and it performed normally: the charging Amp varies according to the level of battery left.  Therefore, the battery is not at fault here.

Can you share any experience and solution?

Thanks.

Best regards

Eric

Re: 9-cell battery problem on X220

Hi

is the AC charge adapter Lenovo geniune too? What about its temperature while the batteries (6-cell and new 9-cell) are charging?

Re: 9-cell battery problem on X220

Hi. Thanks for your reply.

I am using 3 genuine Lenovo chargers: 1x 65W (original), 2x 90W. 90W charger came with docking station.  All the chargers exhibited same behavior.

Battery temperature is in the range of 30 - 35 Degree C.

This one is the original 6 Cell battery.

9Cell.JPG

This one is the new 9-cell battery.

Please note the "Current" as it indicates the charging amp current.  For the 9 cells, it is constant at 0.17A.

Thanks.

Best regards,

Re: 9-cell battery problem on X220

I meant the charger temperature. But as you have different chargers with identical charging behaviour it's not a cause.

Is the 9-cell battery of 29 or 44 series? The last one has internal chip for its identification and protection against counterfeit. But x220 works with batteries w/o that chip ("compatible") from 3rd companies) .

What's the current BIOS version in your laptop?

Re: 9-cell battery problem on X220

Charger is extremely cool because the charging A is low at 0.17A. When I charges the 6-cell, it get warmer.

The 9 Cell is 29++.

I have tried both 1.39 and 1.28 BIOS. Same result. Smiley Sad

Re: 9-cell battery problem on X220

OK, I see.

What's the laptop power consumption level before and while battery is charging?

It ranges in the range of 0.7 A ~ 1.7A in the current column.

Re: 9-cell battery problem on X220

8...19 w, looks usual. There was a chance the power consumtion is higher, so the charger output wattage isn't enough for the battery charging. At the same time laptop Embedded Controller leaves a part of input power for the battery charging in any case, under any laptop loads.

So my opinion - it's ... Embedded Controller' issue. I can't explain why he doesn't recognise or understand new battery.

Try to reset BIOS/EC settings - remove AC charger cable, the battery, press power button and hold it during 20...30 seconds. Release the button, assemble and boot up laptop.

Re: 9-cell battery problem on X220

Thanks for your recommendations. However, it didn't solve the problem.

Is there a way to remove and restore the EC?
