AC Adapter Connection Erratic Instead of Constant

2017-12-15, 9:14 AM

My Thinkpad X1 Carbon (windows 7) is fine until the battery runs low and I have to plug in the AC Adapter. Upon plugging in, the connection goes erratic as if I’m plugging and unplugging every other second. Sometimes it will remain “normal” and charge for a bit, and then it will go back to the erratic AC connection. Simultaneously, the brightness jumps up and down because the system switches back and forth from charging / not charging. Is this perhaps a Lenovo Power Manager issue? I’ve already updated all the drivers. What else could the problem be?

thanks for any ideas and advice!

Probably a failing power adapter or a damaged power jack on your computer.

What gen and model x1 carbon is it? If it's a 5 then try the second usb-c port and see if you get the same results.

Thanks I’ll have to take it somewhere and have it looked at then if a new power cord doesn’t do the job.

At first I did think that could be an issue, but then eliminated the possibility when after updating drivers and firmware it did charge up to 100%. But within no time it began acting erratic again.

Now it won’t charge past 1% because the second it shows it’s plugged in, it goes “unplugged.”

It’s only a matter of time now that it won’t power on at all.

It’s a 20A7. I believe a 2nd gen. Don’t believe there’s a usb-c port.

Ah yeah no. If you have someone with a multi meter that can check what watts and voltage the adapter is putting out I would check that. It does sound like it's tripping the protection circuit in PSU of the x1.

Thanks so much for that information. Now I have a something I can ask a repair person to check for me.

If its tripping the protection circuit does that mean it’s putting out too high wattage / voltage and the fix is get a new AC adapter? Much appreciated.

Yes, but now that I think about it your adapter is probably failing and not giving enough so the laptop just doesn't use it. What does either lenovo settings or companion say in the battery section when you plug it in? It should give you info on the adapter type ect.

Opened Lenovo power manager. It says battery is good. Then something catches my eye right before the computer turns off (it’s at 0%) — both the wattage and voltage numbers are flashing to different values every second / every other second. So you were right! It’s not getting constant current.

1. What happens if you "jiggle" the plug while it's inserted in the ThinkPad? What happens when you "jiggle" the plug that goes into the AC power outlet? Are there any positions where the problem resolves? The issue could simply be a bad or broken plug rather than a bad AC charger. In that case the plug can be replaced.

2.  If you can borrow an AC charger from another ThinkPad with a rectangular plug, see if that resolves the issue. If it does then it's your charger. If the problem continues then there's something wrong with the ThinkPad itself. That's probably bad news unless you have an extended warranty.
