Advice: Buying a new x131e or second hand x220?

2014-08-19, 15:46 PM

As the title says;

I can buy a second hand x220 or a new x131e for roughly the same price.

The x220 is in good condition.

After purchase I would upgrade either one with ssd (thinking crucial mx100) and plug in some extra ram.

The x220 has a Core i5 2520m. Not sure if it has the ips display.

The x131e has a i3 3227u.

Of course warranty is something to consider (I get 6 months on the x220).

Also the x220 has the faster CPU (correct?) and probably a better and larger screen.

Anyone experience with both?

Some points to consider?

If the X220 is clean and has the processor that you want, I'd take it over the X131.

220 parts and accessories are easy find on ebay and remember it was designed from he word go as a BUSINESS machine. It will deliver.

Hello,

I think it largely depends on your use case.  I have both an X220 and an X120e (a couple of generations off from the X131e you mentioned).  Hardware-wise, the X220 is a little larger and a little heavier than the X1nne series, but also a better performer.

On the other hand, the X120e (and the X131e, I asssume) is great for running basic office productivity type tasks and web browsing (typical netbook usage scenario).  Being smaller and lighter, it is also more portable (although the X220 isn't very large, either).

IMHO The only disadvantage of x220 on i5 is USB 3.0 ports missing. If x220' laptop screen is IPS it's a big advantage in comparision with x131e.

Regarding the weght (PSREF):
x131e, 6-cell battery - from 1.78kg
x220, 6-cell battery - from 1.50kg
That's not a typo.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Pretty much convinced about the x220.

Also had an offer for an x220t, even cheaper than the x220.

Same specs, but with a 128gb ssd, and obviously a touchscreen, not sure which of the 2 versions though.

Also not sure how much I would use the touch version, although I do quite a bit of photoshop.

Mats,

I also have had the 120 and the 220 andpresently have the 230. The 220 is more robust, made for work and is fixable...

he 131 is ok for a student not ding stuff that requires serious calcs and processing.

I started with an S10, moved up to the 120, got a 220 when the 120 died, then went 230 (have 3 of them...1 in use and 2 spares since the 240 is a gawdawful mess)...

IMHO the 220/230 is the closest yuou will get to the old IBM 600...my first IMB laptop and like my first date, still a warm spot in my heart!

Thanks for all the tips and advice and sorry for the slow reply from my side.

WWill let you know my experience.
Thanks again.

Good choice though.
Not classic keyboard already, but you have a chance it might be with backlightl. Did you check that option? As well as the screen type...

Not sure about the blacklight and screen.
The selling party isn't into technical specifications really.
I am of course praying for an ips screen. Backlit keyboard would be nice as well. But if not, I still got a very good deal, so...

Request the seller laptop' serial number and be happy. Or not, so be ready to replace keyboard, at least :)
