Audio device is being used by another application

This is a ThinkPad X230 running Windows 7.  The audio driver is the stock Realtek High Definition Audio 6.0.1.7040

After last week's Windows update, all audio ceased to function.

One application said the audio device wasn't turned on.
The first clue as to the problem was the Sound playback window.
When I click on the Realtek device, then Configure, then Test, it says

"Device in Use – The device is being used by another application"

It seems this is a more general problem, that has been happening for years after Windows Updates, on various systems with different audio hardware.

This happens also directly after restart, when no application is open.

The only workaround I've found is via:

    Device Manager,
        Audio, Video- and Game controller
             Realtek high Definition Audio
                Properties
                    Driver
                       Deactivate
then
                       Activate

But when the system is re-started, the sound is again disabled.

I have also tried:

  • Turning off the "exclusive mode" capabilities for applications -- no effect.
  • Changing the device audio frequency (down) -- no effect.
  • Un-installing and re-installing the driver -- no effect.

I'm considering looking on the Realtek site for a newer driver...
But they recommend to use the driver provided by the maker.

A similar problem was reported here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Solution-x230-realtek-audio-no-sound/m-p/1036...
It got no replies.

Any ideas?

It seems solutions vary. I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon and diabling then enabling the device does not work but uninstall driver, reboot, install driver works for a short time.

Surely there is a better solution ?

Re: Audio device is being used by another application

I see the same behavior on my T430s, driver version 6.0.1.7040

Audio doesn't playback.

"test" says "another application is using..."

Disabling and enabling the driver makes the audio work again.

Does anyone have a more long-lasting solution?

Frustrating...
