Me too ... I cannot update this BIOS on my ThinkPad X1 Carbon (6th Generation). Please tell us a work around, such as how to download and install the BIOS update directly.

Good day.

Are you all attempting to update the UEFI/BIOS with Lenovo Vantage? Or are any of you having difficulty updating manually, also?

If you're only having this problem via Vantage, you could go to the Carbon6 driver page and download the manual update package, and try that.

Link: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/de/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-carbon-6th-gen-type-20kh-20kg/downloads/driver-list/component?name=BIOS%2FUEFI

Regards.

Re:BIOS Update 1.49-1.21 is not installed. Why?

Thank you, Nate S

1. The VANTAGE UPDATER found but will not install BIOS Update  1.49-1.21.

2. I went to the manual update page suggested, found the needed BIOS update,

and attempted to install it.  Again, the error message said "Update failed".

3. The same page said there is a 'critical Intel thunderbolt Software and Firmware update"

Under this notice there are instructions the Intel Thunderbird Software

firmware be installed FIRST then install the BIOS firmware.   Great.

The tables suggest I use VANTAGE driver utility (but that doesn't work) or

I go to LENOVO PRODUCT SUPPORT page, and that again runs the driver/software scanner,

which I of course did.  This time I did not select the BIOS update  (+)

and hit ENTER.  There was no "SELECT" option for the Thunderbird firmware itself.

 I clicked on INSTALL

Again the error message said "Update Failed".

There is a TABLE OF MANY POSSIBLE Thunderbird firmware downloads.

There is no instruction on how to decipher this enigmatic table or select

 the correct manual Thunderbird driver.

I cannot comply with the advice to first install the Thunderbolt firmware

and then follow up with installing the BIOS firmware.

I certainly hope LENOVO fixes this blind alley .....

I ALSO downloaded the INTEL DRIVER UPDATER that said I needed the

  1. Intel Wireless Bluetooth for Windows 10 driver and also
  2. Intel Graphic Windows 10DCH Driver

BUT the verbiage that followed said OEM Drivers are handpicked to resolve

platform specific issues, and they recommend using drivers from LENOVO.......

So I didn't install the INTEL drivers.  I fear I'll brick my Carbon X1 6th generation.

Ideas?

thanks!!

Continued efforts 8/19/2020:

I took a chance used the INTEL DRIVER & SUPPORT ASSISTANT to install the Intel Thunderbolt driver (I earlier said Thunderbird / my bad).  I rebooted.  I then ran LENOVO VANTAGE driver update, and still was unable to update the Thinkpad BIOS.   And -- yesterday I'm sure I I SHUT OFF the laptop. This morning, I found it in sleep mode.  This has happened several times.  Could this failure to shut down be related to my inability to update the BIOS?   I'm still stuck ....

There IS something odd going on with Vantage System Update. I think it's flummoxed by the fact that there are two BIOS 1.49 updates, the second with only a new Embedded Control Program. I saw this on two X1C6's.

Package      (ID)     UEFI BIOS (BIOS ID)  ECP (ECP ID)      Rev.  Issue Date

 --------------------  -------------------  ---------------   ----  ----------

 1.49-1.21 (N23UJ27W)  1.49 (N23ET74W)      1.21 (N23HT36W)   01    2020/08/06

 1.49          (N23UJ26W)  1.49 (N23ET74W)      1.20 (N23HT35W)   01    2020/06/10

My advice is first, if you don't need either of these BIOS updates for a specific reason, don't mess with them. If you absolutely do need it, install it manually from the support site download.

Hope this helps!

I can confirm that Vantage is not able to install that BIOS update 1.49-1.21 when 1.49-1.20 has already been installed.  However, it can be installed manually using the web package (n23uj27w.exe) which you can download here:

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ch/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-carbon-6th-gen-type-20kh-20kg/downloads/DS502281

Sorry for this trouble.

SUCCESS!

Thanks greatly for the manual download link for the BIOS update - that worked.

A tiny wrinkle: my VANTAGE sofware says "no updates are available...." (Success!)

but there is a red X next to the entry Thinkpad BIOS Update 1.49.1.21 still reporting

the update failed to install.  VANTAGE is still wrong. Not a problem.  The BIOS did get installed.

Thanks!
