BLURRY CAMERA - ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen3

2020-09-25, 17:59 PM

I just bought and received my ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen3.

The included webcam is blurry as if the focal-point isn't set correctly.

- I have done all the google searching I can.

- Updated windows to the latest everything

- Updated the laptop here to the latest drivers and such available

- Uninstalled the camera driver and then reinstalled it from the official driver here (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/nz/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-extreme-3rd-gen-type-20tk-20tl/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Camera%20and%20Card%20Reader)

I don't know what else can be done...

Is anyone else having out of the box camera issues? Is this a defunct product, or is this just how bad the built-in camera is?

I need the laptop for school and can't send it back and wait for the return, so maybe I'll wait until Christmas break to RMA this? IDK, any feedback is welcome.

UPDATE, the replacement was actually better, out of the box it had the same blur so I assumed it was just hardware (and posted my last comment) but the next day I tried it again and it was able to focus (unlike the first model) and while the quality wasn't great it was WAY better than the initial laptop. So it seems the initial problem was that the built-in webcam had an issue with whatever mechanism drives its autofocus.

Glad Lenovo swapped machines for me, though I am bummed the camera isn't very good on such an expensive laptop.

*note, they never sent shipping info and after several weeks the machine just arrived without notice, would have been nice to get an update so I knew to expect it rather than wondering what the status was.

I just opened mine to see (I never used it for anything than unlocking the pc, until I saw this thread) and whilst it is definitely not the sharpest camera on earth, it did not look like as if it has the same amount of blur as on your shots. This said, I wonder how good a camera (on a business/performance pc) must be...? It is not even a typical "selfie" camera. It's purpose is to show the parties in a teleconference that you are not asleep and that you very interested in what they have to say. And to unlock your pc, if you want it to.

But yeah, I think you should be getting an improvement if you ask for a repair or send back your pc to get a new one.

If you need a significantly better camera for whatever reason, you will be better off with an external one. A tiny 720p camera in the screen would never be able to deliver too much.

I just spent a few hours back and forth with customer support and they're going to send an exchange. Long time to spend mostly on hold but I'm glad they're swapping it for me.

Not expecting perfection, it's only 720p, but some level of focus is expected for the price of this machine ;)

I see your point and you are correct, but it is not the price... it's the design goal of the machine. Even the most expensive Ferrari would not get you up to a mountain with no roads... simply because that's not what it was made for ;) If you know what I mean.

I hope you find your next one to be to your satisfaction. Drop a line here to share. Would be good to know, even just out of curiosity.

I received a replacement laptop from Lenovo, which arrived a few days ago. It has the same blurry camera as the original. So I guess it’s just bad camera hardware and not something that can be fixed. It looks like Lenovo just cut a corner at a really awful time when everyone started to rely on their camera for mobile work.

On my X1EG2, the camera is very sensitive to light level. The difference in image quality in dim room light vs bright is very noticeable.

I think the webcams are just really poor quality, I wouldn't recommend going to the trouble of getting the laptop swapped out, you will have the same experience. Interestingly on AliExpress you can buy the Lenovo camera unit for $7.90 retail! So you're getting a camera worth a couple of $USD trade in your $$$k laptop. Not good.
