Re: Bad ghosting / image retention on X240

2014-10-15, 14:30 PM

Hello everyone,

I got another display swap today. The new display again is a SPB2 (00HM111) and again shows ghosting out of the box. Also the flickering that has been introduced with the first display swap persists with the new display (I assume it has something to do with the backlight).

The technician announced that I will recieve a 3rd exchange panel and a new mainboard.

Make sure there is 60 Hz refresh rate set in Display Properties. You have to set it when running on battery again because some stupid power save modes will revert it back from 60 to 50 Hz.

Thanks for the hint Puppy, I checked that with Xrandr - it shows both 60Hz when the external power supply is connected as well as when it is running of battery.

I also observed that the flickering is less intense when:

1. the external power supply is connected

2. the background is brighter

Since brighter backgrounds show almost no flickering, but darker ones flicker really intensely, I assume it may have to do with the PWM signal for dimming the backlight. The fact that the external power supply reduces the flickering may be a hint that there different converters used for AC and battery power, which results in different PWM signals.

Re: Bad ghosting / image retention on X240

Hello everyone,

today I received my 3rd exchange display. Both of the previous displays (LG LP125WF2-SPB2, IBM Part No.: 00HM111) suffered ghosting out of the box. The display I received today did show no ghosting at all out of the box, which I'm very happy about. Surprisingly though the system reports the display again as LG LP125WF2-SPB2, its part no. is different:

00HM745 (image of type sticker). So maybe this display type is the solution for those of us bothered by the ghosting. Of course it is yet to soon to consider this problem solved, since many people have reported ghosting developing over time (as well as I did with the original display built in by factory) - so I'll monitor the new display and report back in about 8-10weeks if any ghosting has developed. Anyhow for the moment I'm very happy with the new display - thank you lenovo, your service has been commendable!

Re: Bad ghosting / image retention on X240

Sorry to revive an old-ish thread. I believe this topic has not concluded yet. And is still very useful for the person currently searching the market for a screen replacement/upgrade for their X240 system.

I myself am looking for a screen upgrade as I bought my X240 with the standard TN display and now i just want something a little nicer/detailed/crisp etc.

Would anyone know if the standard IPS screen might be a sufficient upgrade from the TN display? I would prefer a Full HD display but I want to avoid any possibility of ghosting issues mentioned here.

Norrit- How have you found your experiences so far with the latest screen replacement (FRU: 00HM745)? Any sign of ghosting or previous issues you had come back up with the new display?

I am a little confused now as to what FRU part no. I should be looking for at for the FHD display at this stage. Should I be looking around for the 00HM111 or 00HM745?

Looking forward to your replies.

Kind Regards,

Daniel

Nothing to be sorry for, the Thread is not that old and as you said not yet concluded.

Of course you might get a slightly better Image quality with the 1366x768 IPS, but in terms of screen real estate anything below FullHD doesn't work any more.

So far I found no ghosting yet. But since the 00HM745 replacemen screen is only about 4 weeks old now it's too early to draw final conclusions. The original screen of my X240 took about 2-3 months to develop first signs of ghosting. So ghosting may still develop till Febuary.

I had 3 different 00HM111 all were bad so 00HM745 is my big hope for now.

Looking forward to your replies.

Kind Regards,

Daniel

Thanks for the clarification. Looking forward to hearing about your experience with 00HM745 display in due time.

Re: Bad ghosting / image retention on X240

Hello all,

I seem to have the same issue with my brand new X240 - ordered on the 11 December and recieved yesterday. I have the touch model with some customisations.

Is there any fix other than replacing the screen? If I have to get the screen placed how should I go about doing this? For such an expensive machine I'd would hope it wouldn't suffer from such flaws.

Any help would be greatly apprieced.

:)

I got a X240 with HDPI screen over Xmas and the screen came with problems of image retention. I'm sending my computer to their depot in Memphis today and fingers crossed they won't take months to return it like I've read other people say happened in their experience.

rafaelnonato,

Got your PM.  Please keep us posted how service goes... sounds like I'm a bit late to catch your system.

Hopefully the new one after service will be fine.

Mark
