Battery not detected, then detected but not charging

X1 Carbon 7th Gen

Prod # 20QDCT01WW

Booted up normally an hour or so ago but got a message "Battery not detected". Otherwise, was able to use the laptop normally. Vantage also said battery not detected,

Did a "Restart" to see if maybe it would then detect the battery. This time it wouldn't boot at all. Unplugged and replugged the charger at both ends. Each time the little pilot light near the USB-C ports did light up.  After multiple tries and twiddling the power switch, the laptop booted up seemingly normally. Vantage says battery is healthy. Charged at 54%.

After 20 minutes or so of use, the battery indicator still says 54%. That is, no increase or decrease in the charge.  It also says "plugged in".

I think this happened once before, maybe a year ago, but did not happen again until today.

I'm afraid to turn the laptop off for fear it won't start up again.

Any ideas what to do?

Re:Battery not detected, then detected but not charging

Calling Premier support this morning solved the problem. The tech didn't even need to do anything. The laptop had started charging by itself. Right now it seems to be working just fine. I never did a hard reset before the machine self corrected.

The tech did suggest that, if the problem recurs, I try a hard reset.

I did learn something new. In the Vantage Power menu, there is something called Smart Standby. That will turn off charging during selected idle hours, in my case 11pm to 8am. In practice, I think what this means is if I shut down at 11pm but leave the machine plugged in, it won't do any charging until 8am the next morning, This tells me that there is a way software can prevent the battery from charging. Maybe that's what was happening by mistake in the past week or two.

Battery not detected, then detected but not charging

Re:Battery not detected, then detected but not charging

Hi RandySea!

Welcome to the Community!

Was there any changes previously prior to the error, such as hardware replacement / upgrade / repair that is related to the Battery Part?

For now, we recommend moving your files / date to an external storage device, so you'll have a backup in case the issue happens again.

For troubleshooting, we can try the following method, and check for changes.

Method 1

  1. Go to Device Manager.
  2. Under Batteries, uninstall Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery.
  3. Restart the laptop.

Method 2

  1. Turn off the laptop.

2.Press the Emergency Reset Hole for 20 Seconds

3.Plug the adapter and turn on the device.

Re:Battery not detected, then detected but not charging

No hardware changes at all. There was a Lenovo update: Lenovo Power and Battery Driver - 10 (1703 or Later)/11 (21H2 or Later) - 10.0.154.0 Successfully installed: 2/10/2023 9:06 AM Will an emergency reset affect any data or programs? Thank you. By the way, I left the laptop plugged in all night. This morning, the battery charge was still showing as 53%. No error message about battery not being detected.

Re:Battery not detected, then detected but not charging

As suggested, I uninstalled Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery. (Event viewer confirms it was deleted.) I restarted and the system reinstalled the driver. Battery is still hanging at 53%.

Re:Battery not detected, then detected but not charging

From what you (Hector) quoted and the manual section on the emergency reset, it seems that is designed for times when "the computer is not responding" and can't be shut off. This is not my case. I can do a normal shutdown or restart of my laptop. At least while plugged in, it seems to be running normally. It is just that the battery won't charge.

Re:Battery not detected, then detected but not charging

I will call Premier warranty support tomorrow. I know they have people working on weekends, but I imagine it is better idea to call on a weekday.

One more little note: If I unplug, the laptop will run. I just tried it. When I plugged back in after a minute or two, the battery had dropped slightly to 52%.

NOT SOLVED

Unfortunately, the "battery not detected" message returned this morning. I'll write more details later.
