Battery works fine one day, next day "Irreparable Battery Damage Has Occured"... TWICE

[ Editado ]
I have a three year old IBM X60s that up until a few days ago, was running perfectly. I decided to restore the entire thing to factory condition using the recovery CD's at which point I then updated all the software to the most recent versions. I have two 8 cell batteries for it. After shutting the lid one night to let it go to sleep, I awoke the next morning and turned it on to see a message that said I had "irreparable battery damage". My battery indicator light flashes orange and my laptop will not charge the battery, even though it says I have 94% left, If I unplug it, the entire thing shuts down. It sees that the battery exists and has a charge, but refuses to use that power. Other then these notifications, it acts exactly the same as if there wasn't a battery. So, as annoyed as I was, I stuck in my other battery. I'm sitting on the couch, using my laptop one day, when all of sudden, the entire thing shuts down completely. I plug it in and turn it on to get the message "A battery error has occurred. The battery cannot be charged. Replace the battery." Even though it says this battery is around 80% charged. Now the both have this message despite the fact that up until a few days ago, both were functioning perfectly, holding around 5 hours of charge, which was plenty good enough for me. One has been through a few more then 200 charge cycles, the other a little over 100. I'm at an utter loss as to what to do. I've run the battery diagnostic tool and it says both batteries have not been recalled. I've tried recalibrating them, but nothing works. They are obviously way out of warranty, but this is obviously not a problem with the batteries since they were functioning perfectly before this incident. What should I do?

those batteries seem to has build in timer that makes them go "unrepaired" after some time.

I have multiple cases of similar behavior on T60 and X60 batteries.

and what is funny my old T41 batteries still works fine after 5 years of use!

Did you find any resolution for this?  We have experienced the same thing with a T60.  It gave the "irreparable damage" error, so we swapped out the battery, and then the second battery that was working just fine, ALSO gave the "irreparable damage" error.  I am at the same conclusion as you: it's far less likely that both batteries went bad simultaneously, than that there is a problem with the laptop itself.

Unfoturnately, I have not found a fix. I believe the problem is in both the laptop, and the batterys. Because the laptop causes the batteries to think they cannot charge, and then the chips in the batteries report themselves as being broken. Although out of warrenty, this is unnacceptable and I plan on contacting Lenovo very soon.

Re: Battery works fine one day, next day "Irreparable Battery Damage Has Occured"... TWICE

hi,

i now have the same problem. the battery just died and i have a flashing orange battery icon, the software tells me the battery is at 90% charge.

i read in the forum that the charging unit of the mainboard might be damaged if you keep running your notebook whilst the icon is flashing.

what was your solution? did you just buy a new battery and it worked again?

thanks in advance,

regards,

chris

Just got the same problem, 1 week before my laptop's warrenty dies...... I call BS...... It was working perfectly the day before and the timeing on this is way to conicidental.... I've owned this laptop scince it was new and NEVER discharged the battery entirly, I'll be on the phone with support for the next day or so but they say that my battery's warrenty is only 1 year so what a way to get me to spend some more on this scrap heap, put a time bomb into the battery..........

I've got the same issue and am wondering whether replacing the battery solves the problem. I've taken a look at a number of other threads and a couple of folks claim that their computer is frying their batteries. Is that happening to you guys too?
