Best Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Docking Station Options

2016-05-01, 1:56 AM

I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon and I was considering either purchasing the Thinkpad Onelink Pro Dock or the Thinkpad One Link Dock.  I need to be able to connect a monitor and keyboard to my new computer.

I have a some questions that I was hoping someone can help with.

1.  What is the difference between the Pro Dock and the Regular Dock?

2.  If my monitor does not have HDMI will these two docking stations still allow me to connect a monitor?

3.  Can you connect two monitors with both the pro dock and regular dock stations?

4.  Are there other docking station options that are better?

5.  Do these docking stations work with all versions of the x1 carbon?

Your help is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Go with Pro. More more Ports and better functions.

1.  What is the difference between the Pro Dock and the Regular Dock?

Pro is better

2.  If my monitor does not have HDMI will these two docking stations still allow me to connect a monitor?

Yes. Most dock comes with DP to DVI convertor, or HDMi to DVI convertor. If you dont get one. You can always pick up a cheap one outside

3.  Can you connect two monitors with both the pro dock and regular dock stations?

Yes you can connect two monitors. I currently have x1 carbon 2nd gen and use Pro dock. I connect two monitors and also use my laptop as a 3rd screen. works seamlessly.

4.  Are there other docking station options that are better?

Stick to Lenovo. Cause its a single port that also charges your laptop. If you get a 3rd party docking, then you need to connect one cable to your laptop for power and then other for your dock. With Lenovo Dock one cable does both.

5.  Do these docking stations work with all versions of the x1 carbon?

No. There are a few limitations. best way to find the right one for you is to go to lenovo website, using the serial number of your laptop to find your laptop and then click on accessories tab. This way only compatible Docks will be shown.

Side note, I bought my dock from ebay, brand new sealed in box for half of what was advertised on Lenovo website.
