Bios Update causes Hard Locks on X300

2008-04-27, 16:38 PM
Hello,
I just updated to to the latest BIOS on my X300, and have been experiencing frequent hard locks. I'm running Linux, and this is a Linux issue, but the root of the problem is definitely Lenovo's BIOS update. The error Linux gives me is:
BIOS bug, APIC version is 0 for CPU#0! fixing up to 0x10. (tell your hw vendor)

I was wondering if there's any way to downgrade my system so that I don't constantly hard lock or whether there's a way to get Lenovo to fix this problem?

what version did you install, 1.03b?   according to this page, lenovo has pulled all recent BIOS updates and are working on a fix for a bug found during installation.   i'm not sure if other fixes are in the works.

1.02a was the previous version.
the bootable CD version can be downloaded here: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7tuj02uc.iso
the self-launching 32-bit windows version is here: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7tuj02us.exe

Argh...I did install 1.03b. I tried the bootable 1.03a but it won't let me install..says I don't need to update. Any way to force it to overwrite the current bios? Hopefully they'll release a fix soon.

i'm not sure how to force the downgrade of a BIOS.   it might have to go into service.   older thinkpads downgraded without a problem so this ability must have been removed.

fwiw, my X300 is on 1.03b and doesn't lock up but i'm also running server 2008 and not linux.

ThinkPad X300 frequently locks-up when a USB device is inserted (when the PC is attached to external power - on battery it seems to accept USBs).

I was unable to load BIOS 1.03b.

Any solutions - or is this matter for Lenovo warranty?
