Bitlocker Using Drive Hardware Encryption

2018-10-18, 8:26 AM

Waiting to receive my X1E shortly.

In the meantime, will be using Bitlocker encryption on both OS and 2nd NVME drives. Wanting to know how easy it is to configure hardware encryption on these NVME drives including native integration with Bitlocker so login into Windows unlocks Bitlocker drives (not separate 3rd party unlock mechanism).

I remember looking at this top a while ago and realised it wasn't easily achievable. I also wonder with the top spec i7 processor spec'd on my laptop if there's any real practical different between hardware and software encryption performance wise.

Lenovo OEM drives don't support BitLocker hardware encryption.  Microsoft's implementation causes too many problems, so we dropped support for it years ago.  We ship OPAL drives.  You can enable hardware encryption by setting a HDD password in BIOS setup, or else by using OPAL management software such as WinMagic SecureDoc.
