Black screen and fan running 100% during update - frozen for over an hour

X1 Carbon had some outstanding updates recommended from Lenovo app.  After re-booting one remained which I think was a BIOS update.  I accepted the update and left it connected to AC.  It has been on a black screen for over an hour and the fan is running permanently.  The power light is on and not flashing.  I do not know the stage that the update reached.  Should I turn off or hard reset?  Should I leave powered overnight or will the fan burn out?

Model number is 20QD-CT01WW

Thanks for any assistance

Re:Black screen and fan running 100% during update - frozen for over an hour

Welcome to Lenovo Community RGF100,

Experiencing a black screen during a BIOS update can be worrisome as it suggests a potential issue with the update process. It's important to avoid interrupting a BIOS update whenever possible, as it can lead to a bricked system, rendering the device inoperable.

To ensure efficient cooling during the update, make sure your laptop is placed on a hard, flat surface, with unobstructed vents. You may also consider using a cooling dock to assist with heat dissipation. In this situation, it is advisable to wait for a reasonable amount of time to see if the update completes successfully. Monitor the progress closely.

If the fan noise becomes excessively loud while facing the black screen problem, it may indicate that the fan is operating at maximum speed, potentially working harder than usual. However, it's unlikely that the fan will burn out within a short period of time as laptop fans are designed to handle prolonged high-speed operation without damage.

If you are concerned about the fan running at high speeds for an extended period, it is recommended to power off the laptop by pressing and holding the power button until it shuts down. This will effectively stop the fan from running and help prevent potential overheating issues.
