Re: Calling P1 and X1 Extreme users to update BIOS 1.19 - fan noise much better now!

After 1.19 update, under what situations do fan noise kick in? When I had the machine in November, it alternated between dead silent and jet engine. Has this behavior been fixed? For running office productivity applications and watching youtube, will it be dead silent?

Good to hear, but it would still be nice to have a failsafe BIOS.

How far is the depot for you and what was the process for sending it in? I've been through two on-site episodes and wonder whether it's worth it to shell out the cash for the service.

Thanks for reminding - usually Vantage is about one week later than web, I will have it caught up Monday or Tuesday.

Re: Calling P1 and X1 Extreme users to update BIOS 1.19 - fan noise much better now!

The depot is several states away from me but Lenovo arranged to have it overnighted each way, so the distance was not really a factor. The repair itself took approx. 48 hours (but times will vary depending on the availability of parts, the volume of service requests, etc). My advice is to call tech support and see if a depot repair is covered with your warranty.

Re: Calling P1 and X1 Extreme users to update BIOS 1.19 - fan noise much better now!

I'm on 1.17 after having bricked mine after 2 days. So I'm pretty concerned about making any changes. Especially because there is no going back if it screws up. So if I do it from 1.17, do I first put 1.18 in, and then update to 1.19? Or just go straight to 1.19, or does it matter?

For what it's worth, I was on 1.17 and then upgraded to 1.18. Then I upgraded to 1.19 via the attachment in this thread.

Everything worked just fine for me.

You can directly jump into 1.19 from 1.17, you won't regret, guranteed!

Re: Calling P1 and X1 Extreme users to update BIOS 1.19 - fan noise much better now!

The 1.19 update came to my P1 Xeon today via Vantage.

I installed it - but no big change. XTU score is still low - fans still spinning high - and Vantage still reports Bios 1.18 and no new updates.

During the update something flashed on screen (built in) in very small letters and then shut down. After 5 min I turned on again and it proceeded to update some microcode and reboot.

So I don't think my firmware update went "well"

Intel XTU gives me Thermal throttling from about 11% CPU usage.

XTU Score 1876 marks - default settings.

I'm vacationing where I have lousy internet so I'll wait until I get home. Is the thermal design so crappy that throttling like that is acceptable?  I see that on mine too when it's hardly doing anything. How do reviewers get high scores out of it?

Re: Calling P1 and X1 Extreme users to update BIOS 1.19 - fan noise much better now!

I think mine is not put together right

Bios 1.18 Cinebench R15 - 965 (CPU Multi) - reasonably consistant.

Bios 1.19 Cinebench R15 - 905-955 (CPU Multi) - quite random clean booted machine. But a lot more random than 1.18 bios

Reviews of the P1 -

Notebook Check : Cinebench R15 - 1118 (CPU)  -https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-P1-Xeon-E-2176M-Quadro-P2000-Max-Q-Workstation-Review....

PC Magazine : Cinebench R15 -1149 (CPU) -  https://uk.pcmag.com/laptops/118584/lenovo-thinkpad-p1

So at least my P1 is TERRIBLE and gives 10+% worse performance than review machines.
