X1 carbon 6th gen camera not recognized by windows 10!!!!

2020-03-18, 5:59 AM

Hello,

I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th Generation laptop running Windows 10 that I purchased in Nov 2018. I usually leave the shutter to my camera closed, but with the spread of corona virus I've recently had to schedule a number of meetings via skype, zoom, etc. Today I tried to enter a skype call and my camera is not working for skype, zoom, or the windows camera app.

I keep up with WIndows updates and occasionally check Lenovo Vantage for updates. I have since run every update I can find. The camera does not appear in Device Manager. I tried installing the driver off of the Lenovo site and have rebooted after just about all of these steps and still no camera recognized.

Lenovo Vantage settings don't show any camera settings

Windows camera settings look normal (all apps allowed to use camera)

Again, camera doesn't show up in any part of device manager, even after scanning for hardware changes

the shutter is open for the camera

i've tried windows troubleshooter, and the 'hardware and devices' option doesn't show up; when i manually run the hardware and devices troubleshooter from the command line, it doesn't detect any issue with anything.

I last used the camera in a Zoom meeting in December 2019, and it worked just fine

Any suggestions to troubleshoot this issue? Please help - would be VERY helpful to not use a smartphone for conference calls through this corona virus pandemic and beyond!!

Thanks!!!

Check the BIOS/Setup under Security >> I/O Port Access >> Integrated Camera and make sure it is Enabled.    If disabled in the BIOS you won't see it in Device Manager.

Cheers,

Thanks so much for your reply.

I forgot to include that in the list of things I tried -- the Integrated Camera is ENABLED in the BIOS Setup as well.

Any other ideas?? I feel as though I've exhausted all of the options that come up with various google searches.

Thanks!

Hi shikaili333, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

Did you try a manual install of the camera driver, downloaded from support.lenovo.com?

Also try an Emergency Reset (shut down then press button in pinhole on bottom).

Let us know how you're doing!

I've got a Gen 4 and tracked this down to a bug in webcam driver 10.0.18362.20105.

You can validate this is the same issue by going to Event Viewer -> Windows Logs -> System. Look for Errors from "Service Control Manager". Clicking on them you'll see a message "The Windows Camera Frame Server service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 7 time(s).". The camera driver is crashing. Repeatedly.

The only way I was able to resolve after hours of reinstalling drivers was a complete reinstall of windows. I then very carefully installed updates excluding the webcam driver.

Unfortunately Lenovo Vantage somehow re-enabled automatic updates a couple of weeks ago and reinstalled the broken driver again. So I'm again without webcam but don't have time to reinstall the entire OS and all my apps, settings, etc.

Not enough testing of their updates from Lenovo! Really disappointing.
