Can X301 support multiple external monitors?

2008-12-26, 19:19 PM

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a X301, but I'd like the ability to drive 2 external monitors at 1600x1200 (the native resolution of those devices).  Does anyone know if the X301 can do that?  If I need a specific external dock to do that, can someone point me towards that dock?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

-Jeff

the X301 have a display port and vga output supported natively on the actual machine, which can support one external monitor, you can then get Lenovo usb enhanced port replicator, which has another vga output, using that you can output two external monitor....

haven't tried it, since i don't have a X301, but theoretically it should work, maybe someone can confirm this for you, as the last thing you want is to purchase a machine and it turns out that it won't work in the way you hoped it can.

Internal x301 driver settings show 1400 x 900 max resolution.  So I am not sure you can get the resolution you seek.

The internal driver setting is specific for the internal LCD monitor which is at 1440 x 900, have you tried to connect a large monitor to it?? the graphics card on the X301 should be able to support a much higher resolution, when the correct screen is connected.

Jeff-  I have an X300 (no DisplayPort). I connect the ThinkPad to two external 22" Lenovo monitors via a simple, inexpensive USB hub and two USB-to-DVI adapters.  I bought EVGA's UV Plus+ (model UV-16).  They also make USB-to-VGA.   The performance is great and I'm able to use the X300 as the primary with the externals both in extended mode.

Also, I only have to plug in the USB hub and power.  It's as quick as docking was on my T61, as that required a second or two to align the TP and the dock.

Good luck,

Fore!

Hi,

The electronista (http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/08/17/lenovo.thinkpad.x301/) states for the x301:

"and adds DisplayPort without removing VGA, supplying the system with not only a digital output for 2560x1600 displays but the option of two external monitors without special add-ons."

This is particularly appealing, and it implies the usage of 3 displays.. has anybody tried it..?

 Thanks.

The x4500 GPU in the x301 is only a Dual head card.

Therefore, you should be able to drive two external monitors (one VGA, one DisplayPort); but you will lost the laptops LCD when doing this.

If you want to have 3 simultaneous monitors, you will either need a USB→DVI adapter to create a second display adapter, or a device like the DualHead2Go  to trick the x301 into thinking that both external monitors are only a single display.
